#?

For the love of God, can someone explain to me what the # means? Where did it come from? Who started it? What's it's purpose?

#twitter It's dumb IMO, I'm guessing you're seeing it a lot on facebook, usually people posting their tweets on facebook too.

I guess I'm getting old cause I read it "number Penn state"

It's used to signal/track trending topics on twitter. You see it on Facebook because some people have their accounts setup to post whatever they are saying on both sites.

Yeah, but ... facebook also = #epicdumb.

Number? Or pound sign?
Welcome, fellow old person! :-)

Anyone who says Twitter is dumb either doesn't have one, or are too stubborn to learn how to use it. Great source of information. Forget what celebrities and other people have to say...it's all about having the most up-to-date information on any subject you desire.
