Which private Schools offer "Diversity Scholarships"?

Featured Replies

Private high schools in Kentucky are allowed to offer the following as "tuition assistance" to a student-

-Merit scholarship to equal no more than 25% of the total tuition

-Need based scholarship to equal no more than the demonstrated financial need of the family as determined by a 3rd party company approved by the KHSAA (not the school)

Those are the straigtforward facts, regardless of what folks might say.

This does not mention an alumnus of said private school getting a money order to cover the tuition payments for an athlete and handing what is in essence cash money off to the parents at the game. As far as the KHSAA is concerned there is no scholarship and they refuse to investigate it but this is how "needs based scholarships" are covered on Shelbyville Rd. It is completely illegal, that's not to mention the illegal personal contact of potential athletes in the 8th grade to offer them this great deal. Or the letters sent to 8th graders from said alumnus offering "diversity scholarships" or "leadership scholarships" to potential athletes before the family has made contact with the school or the child has been accepted to the school, also completely illegal. This has all been going on for 2 or 3 decades at minimum and since it is not an official coach but a "friend of the program" the KHSAA turns a blind eye.

As for the level playing field, no public school is allowed to have volunteer coaches, privates are - see Trinity's 25 strong coaching roster when JCPS staffs are limited to 6 distric paid positions and 6 more if the booster club can fund them. These 12 coaches must coach all 3 levels of football, Trinity has more freshman coaches than most publics have on staff for varsity.

No public school is going to get 100-150 freshman playing football, period. As Larry said, at least in JCPS, space is limited in the programs at Male and Manual (since they are in the same district, I thought this a good comparison) and they have females and Title IX to deal with, privates can accept as many incoming freshmen as they like, many of the athletes hand-picked (see above), plus no Title IX to suck away football funds on girls lacross. These two factors mean that that the privates can spend 2 to 3 times the publics on their program and we all know money talks.

Alum, I'll call and ask the coaches question to the KHSAA and give an report. You sound angry and thats not my intent, does your child play at Trinity, like mine does at Male? Remember, I said I have no problem with kids going to the private schools.

You bet I'm angry. I'm very angry. Read the tripe spouted by some_guy. Where are these letters? I have no doubt that the KHSAA would investigate that type of letter - if it existed. I am angry because I know the efforts made by Trinity to make sure that the school stays in strict compliance with the rules. I also know the efforts made by Trinity to make sure that all supporters and parents know the rules and follow them. I am angry because even very reasonable people post that they "hear things in their circle". I don't doubt that you hear things. I just know that what you hear just isn't true. I went to Trinity, my brothers went to Trinity, my sons went to Trinity, my nephews went to Trinity. Someday my grandsons will go to Trinity. My sons played football, but my support didn't start when my sons arrived and it didn't stop when they left.

Is this true? Why wouldn't khsaa allow someone to volunteer their time. Are you telling me Highlands is paying Cris Collinsworth to coach the receivers part time?

Public schools are allowed to have "volunteer coaches" and many do. I know of one school that has around 10 coaches, and only two are paid, or so people from the school tells me. Many schools have at least one volunteer coach, and many people may not even know they are volunteer, some are teachers but do not receive a coaches pay in addition to their teaching salary.

You are absolutely 100% correct that the KHSAA would aggressively and thoroughly investigate that type of letter and would sanction Trinity if the stuff mentioned in some_guy's post was accurate. Sorry some_guy, but I was on the BOC and I know from experience the KHSAA would not turn a blind eye at all. In fact we investigated and sanctioned another private school pretty severely a couple years back for allowing third parties to pay tuition or provide financial assistance to students.

It irritates the you know what out of me to read posts like some_guy's that accuse the KHSAA of turning a blind eye. It is blatantly false and is possibly slanderous of the KHSAA and Trinity. If what some_guy says is true about the KHSAA turning a blind eye, I challenge him to contact a newspaper, Ky Dept of Education or a legislator and provide the evidence. To say the KHSAA turns a blind eye to the type of letter he referenced is an insult of me and I'm not happy about it at all.

Back it up or shut it up some_guy. Post the letters if you have one. Turn it over to the Courier Journal, the Lex Herald Leader or the Enquirer. I'm sure some reporter looking to make a name would love to investigate it and run the story.

Yeah if it's not clear enough for you, I'm not happy one dang bit with your post because of what it insinuates against my character and reputation. I gave up a lot of time with my family and billable hours to my law firm to be on the KHSAA BOC and serve high school athletics and I never once turned a blind eye to allegations of illegality by any school.

Then maybe they need to do as others and have seperate divisions, Its all about the kids and a level playing field, thats all. Build it and they will come, Prep school is the answer. Sorry you got angry, not my purpose and it makes me sad if I did. Your kid didn't lose 100-7. Mine did.

I would love to see this rule. I find this TOTALLY BOGUS.

When my kids played we experienced big wins and big losses. I know how it feels.. There is nothing being done at Trinity that can't be done at any school in the state. It isn't easy. It starts with people who are willing to pay what it costs to have a top notch school. At Trinity it is donors and parents. In public schools it is taxpayers. It takes a school board that is willing to demand the highest quality from the paid administrators. At Trinity it is volunteer boards. In the public schools it is an elected board. It takes administrators that insist upon the highest quality from teachers, cafeteria workers, staff, coaches and down to the custodial staff. Everyone can help with that. Every time you walk through the school find something that needs to be fixed, painted or cleaned. Then make sure it gets done. It takes teachers with a talent and passion for teaching. If they don't have it, they need to be gone. If the administrators won't get rid of them, get new administrators. It takes teachers and administrators that demand high performance and good behavior from every student. Perphaps most of all it takes parents that won't settle for less. Those things are the real Trinity advantages. It is a level playing field at the start. It is what is done with the playing field after that makes the difference.

So you're alleging that all of these things are going on, and the KHSAA has been fully aware for "2 or 3 decades at minimum", and the KHSAA does nothing? Might I ask why you haven't done anything to try to rectify the situation? I'm sure there are hundreds of attorneys in Kentucky who would LOVE to get into a high profile case and bust the KHSAA's "decades long" scheme. Why haven't you asked any of the Jefferson County schools that you support to look into filing some kind of suit? Are the are the private schools writing money orders out to the court system too?

 ......blinded by delusion.

Way to ignore the inherent differences between public schools.

As to the bolded all I will say is that there is much to learn from how someone handles losing. I guess it's a lot easier to complain then to actually do something about the percieved differences. Personally I hope that Male can get past Meade and X. I would now LOVE to shut them out for a third straight game.

These are all things that I have witnessed with my own 2 eyes, if you wish to pretend it does not go down then please continue to live in fantasy land.

I know for a fact that Jefferson, Kenton, Boone and Fayette county Public schools must compensate all coaches, they can be para-professionals and work outside of the school but they must be paid something.

What is the rationale for mandating that all coaches must be compensated? Needless to say, that puts a chill on volunteerism. How much compensatioin is required, I wonder? Does it have anything to do with the teachers' union?

Academics are not the issue, I read an article last month detailing where Jefferson county area National Merit Award semifinalists go to school, Manual 42 - Trinity 2 - St X. 5, in fact home school kids did better than either on of the privates and 6 public schools had more qualifiers than Trinity. In the academic arena the public schools are making up ground while overcoming much bigger socio-economic problems. You're funny, I like you.
