First, Did you mean Adversity rather than Diversity?

 

I wonder how the rule applies to outside scholarship providers. I know in the case of Cov Cath, there are a few of the Kenny and Brian Williams Foundation Scholarship recipients that played sports. Those scholarships are 4 Years Tuition and Fees so it would seem that the 25% doesn't apply. I know a couple of the recipients and they were swimmers and played baseball. It's not like they are using it to load up one sport or another. Looking through the list, no name jumps out as a real Standout athlete. So no abuse.

 

I really never thought about it. I guess if a school's alumni were wealthy enough they could create a situation that made a real difference.

The KHSAA distinguishes between merit (ie academics/athletics) aid and needs-based aid. The 25% rule applies to merit aid.

 

If the scholarship is needs-based then there are tests the KHSAA applies through a board appointed by the BOC. The CCH Williams scholarship is a needs-based scholarship.

 

In addition, the scholarship has to come through the school. That means an alumnus could not simply create a scholarship and write a check to a kid. The money would have to go to the school and then the school would run it through the required tests to see if it can be given to an athlete.

ALLTell, things have changed at Male. We are 3-7 and lost to trinity 49-7. Yes, the game tape showed our Freshman scored on the long run. Ask some Trinity coaches/Players if they saw the tape.

 

To be fair guys I know guys who got into private schools Bishop David/Desales/Trinity/X back in the 70s and they had help, and we thought nothing of it. I thought it was fine that my buds got to go where they wanted to. So things may have changed since then I don't lose sleep over it since we got Tony Driver back in the 90s. That is a joke..here. :laugh:

 

 

Remember, I said I think its great kids Boys/Girls can get a chance to go where they want to. I think several players from Trinity played against us at Highview Optimist the past few years. And some were on our team.

 

Larry, The rules in the 70s were different. Financial aid didn't have a lot of rules. I remember going to speak to the then principal about a young man that I thought would do well at Trinity but couldn't afford it. He was not an athlete. The principal said if other sources could come up with half, the school would come up with half. No paperwork, just my word that the family couldn't afford it. Today the rules are very explicit. I am very familiar with how Trinity handles financial aid and it follows the rules in letter and spirit. Insinuations such as those in your post that imply some financial impropriety do a disservice to the families involved, the school and you. I think most people would be shocked if they knew the steps Trinity goes through to make sure that they stay within the rules.

Alum, where was I using Insinuations? You even stated "things have changed since the 70s" which I brought up of having first hand knowledge of kids getting in. I repeatly said "I have no problem with kids going to a private school if thats what they want, and was happy for my buds who got in". Disservice to the school and me? Now where did I say that or maybe its you saying it for me? I'll wait for a retraction.

As a Public School supporter (Four Sons) I see nothing wrong in helping a student who wants to attend a private school, what gets me is when this happens and then when their team wins a game they act like they are the greatest thing since Ice Cream.

 

I know of several kids who got into a private schools and their family was on a real low income and living in assited housing. Thats OK with me it is America, its all about the Child. I've had three sons go to college and one has a double major (Eight years) so I we could have sent our boys to any school in the state.

 

If that isn't an insinuation, I don't know what is. If you insinuate something outside the rules, saying you are okay with it makes no diference. That just implies you are okay with rule breaking. If you didn't mean to insinuate that these families with "real low income and living in assisted housing" didn't receive aid outside the rules, please clarify what you did mean by bringing up their financial status.

And what you hear comes from people that don't know their rump from a hot rock. These people can't live with the fact that someone is beating them. They have to believe there must be cheating involved. It makes them feel better.

I know that Cincy LaSalle had a scholarship called a diversity scholarship. If I'm not mistaken Devier Posey was one of the recipients a few years back. Only reason I know this is because I have a buddy who got scholarship money from LaSalle. I don't know if they still do this.

I think there is nothing wrong in helping a child get into the private schools, and even play sports while there. But when this happenes and they can get kids from different areas and become very powerful in sports, then there has to be a level playing field. Remember, I said its about the kids, and thats all kids at Atherton/Vally/Fern Creek/ Male/manual/ Seneca...

 

I have been saying this for many years. And don't tell me "We just have to practice harder," thats doesn't make sense.

The playing field is level. There are no KHSAA rules that are different for private schools compared to public schools. The difference is what the schools decide to do within those rules that give some schools an advantage. Are there families, some of them with athletes, that decide they want to have those advantages? You bet there are. I don't understand why there aren't more. Our kids don't have a single advantage that we didn't generate from within. All of those advantages are available to public schools. Get going on it. You stated above that you have the financial resources to have sent your kids to a private school. Good. That means you have at least $11,000 per year you can give to help level the playing field. How many other members of the Male community have the same? Will they make that financial committment? Will they continue to contribute for decades after they are no longer at the school? Will they contribute to make sure that their children, grandchildren and generations yet to come have the opportunity? Will they contribute to make sure that kids from families they've never met have the opportunity? Will they volunteer to work for the school decades after they no longer have any direct student connection? When I say work harder, that is what I mean. When you do all of that, the kids will take care of the work on the field.

Male has the nicest one but they were told if they move to Preston they will get an upgrade, the weight room/track was finally made to two rooms this year. If I donate any funds it has to be divided with the girls programs. Girls sports also use fields and indoor time. We can get kids from Barrett/Johnson/& JCTMS. There is no limit for your school, in fact there are many Catholic schools but you can still come to the schools I mentioned. We have no radio coverage. Not really sure if Male could work out an agreement with a station. The funds would also have to to the girls.

 

Male is restricted on kids due to isues and some kids are on your team right now who were gonna be turned down by Male. The grades have to be at a certain GPA, also behavier and with that thought, I'm glad your school and St X allows kids to get in.

 

We also have to find teams outside Jefferson County to play us, our JVs/Freshman played only nine games. How many coaches are at your school? I helped my son by chasing his kicks to save him from walking, we have no special teams coach/strenth coach. This is divided between what we have. Your Boys enrollment doubles ours. Want more? AL, I think the world of you. But both X and T have come from nothing. And you've been to both schools. The facilities are great, but that money came from our own pockets. The football field at Trinity is shared for all sports. We don't have a baseball field (you do). We don't have tennis courts. We don't have a track. But we do work out arrangments with various community resources. And I don't understand what the comment about the where the kids come from has to do with our facilities? But while we're at it, kids from Catholic grade schools can't just enter whatever public school they want. My daughter wanted to go to public school. Her desire was Male or Manual. We considred Ballard and Eastern. In the end, the JCPS told us she'd HAVE to go to Seneca. So, Assumption is where she ended up. As for sharing with the girls, if the fields can be multi-purpose, I don't see why funds can't be successfully and meaningfully used to benefit both girls and boys programs?

RM, its OK to disagree with people you care about, ask Mama. She could write a Novel. The Publics are way behind in their situations for the kids and might not ever catch up, but Alum said there was no advantage for them or "The playing field is level". And its not, I made some points. And I still say its ok for the kids to get into the privates schools and the school should help them. Look at the scores of the top Publics verses Trinity/X, speaks loudly. Jvs/freshman were closer but our numbers will always be behind.

If you want to talk about level playing fields how about addressing the discrepancy between public schools? Are Iroquois' facilities equal to those at Eastern? Are Atherton's facilities equal to those at Ballard? How about out in the state. Go to Paul Dunbar sometime. Their overall facilities may be the best in the state public or private. FWIW the same year Male moved to Preston Highway the lights at Iroquois were condemned and had to be replaced. I was told that JCPS could only afford to install lights at one field that year so Iroquois played all of their home games on Friday afternoons. Manual chartered coaches for the long trip to Trinity this year. How many other public schools could (or would) do that. Please don't talk about the unlevel playing field between public and private when it is so slanted in the favor of some public schools over other public schools.

Al, you completly missed the point. All you did was point out differences. Go fix the things you don't like, don't give me the excuses. Not one thing you cited is a KHSAA rule. I get very defensive because I know how hard it is to generate all of our "advantages". We all start out playing under the same KHSAA rules. That is why the playing field is level. It is what you choose to do under those rules that generates the advantages. I think your first sentence says it all. They were told they would GET an upgrade. (emphasis mine) How about you go out and generate that upgrade. You don't have a weight room, raise the money and build one. Don't want to share the funds, all of our money goes to the school, not to a specific team. Don't have a radio broadcast, go out and sign up sponsors. The limit on where your kids come from isn't a KHSAA rule. Changing it is up to the JCPS. How many coaches do we have? The number the KHSAA allows - Oh wait the KHSAA doesn't limit the number of coaches.
