It was actually in '83 on SS taxes. I often hear democrats and liberals talk about Regan raising taxes. I also tire from listening to it because they never say why he did it. He was promised significant spending cuts (which never happened) by democrats. He also didn't have much of a choice. The congress outnumbered him. He made a pragmatic choice. If you want to compare the overall tax cuts with over all tax raises...I don't think you are going to get very far.

It really wasn't my intent but you have to admit, he was considered by many a loose cannon going into the Presidency. It wasn't until later that history vindicated him on many things.

 

And I'd also add that Reagan had enough years to invent himself in many ways before the presidency. He was nearly twice as old as Obama when he was elected. j/k

$17.204 billion in loans out of $38.6 billion in loans has already been given out creating 3,545 jobs. That comes out to $4,853,000 per permanent job.

Two different people and two different policies.

 

On one end you had a competent President who knew what he was doing, on the other you have a man who is learning as he goes and enjoying his celebrity status as he goes on the Jay Leno show (don't miss him on there tonight people). We could see unemployment dropping towards the end of Reagan's fourth year. We won't see it under Obama because spending money you don't have doesn't work and never has.

Despite the naysayers, Obama has a lot going for him besides the built-in advantage of being the incumbent. His successes in our war efforts will be untouchable. He presided over the death of two of the world's most hated people. And, he's bringing our troops home from Iraq. I imagine that will go over well. I don't see where any opponent can make any headway in that realm.

 

The worst thing that could happen for him and his re-election bid is for the economy to suddenly nosedive in mid-2012.

I'm with you. I thought he'd be tough to beat regardless as an incumbent, but now it looks even more difficult. I expect him to win another term.
