September 28, 201114 yr I think Ohio is the battleground state. It will decide the election. Obama already realizes this, IMO. He's been spending a lot of time lately traveling to Ohio pushing his jobs bill and infrastructure.
September 28, 201114 yr  While true as of late, Clinton won Kentucky twice, I believe. Obama is not Clinton. Won't happen again IMO.
September 28, 201114 yr The Presidential ( race and I really don't think you can call it a race yet until the Republicans have a candidate ) is still a tossup . Right now I would hesitate to vote for Obama even though I am a life long Democrat and if the Republicans are smart enough to nominate Romney he will have my vote . No other Republican candidate running now can be elected IMVHO
September 28, 201114 yr  Isn't that the truth. I don't know, maybe my view of the nations feelings on Obama is limited due to the area I'm in, but I've yet to come across anyone who has nice things to say about how he's handling the economic crisis. I think that's true. The problem for the GOP, from my angle, is that their candidate's platform is being built around being "not Obama." While that might be intuitive on paper, it's a supremely ineffective way of winning an election.

While that might be intuitive on paper, it's a supremely ineffective way of winning an election. Some think that's how Obama won...by "not being Bush", because McCain was successfuly painted as a Bush clone.
September 28, 201114 yr Some think that's how Obama won...by "not being Bush", because McCain was successfuly painted as a Bush clone. While I think Bush's legacy primed the pump for a Democrat to be heavily favored, I don't think that's an accurate reflection of that race or Obama's campaign.
September 28, 201114 yr Some think that's how Obama won...by "not being Bush", because McCain was successfuly painted as a Bush clone. I was getting ready to say that RM--that it seemed to work for Obama in 2008. I will say this: I think that's a shallow way to do things, but I do think it can be very effective. I believe it worked for Obama in 2008 & we'll see how it works for the GOP in 2012.
September 28, 201114 yr Obama is not Clinton. Won't happen again IMO. Oh, I agree there's no way Obama comes close to carrying Kentucky. But I do think a centrist, Southern Democrat could find success in Kentucky in the same way that Clinton did.
September 28, 201114 yr Obama is not Clinton. Won't happen again IMO. Kentucky (and Missouri) were the bell weather predictor states until 2008. I believe both went with the winner since the early 60s. Now Missouri owns the title. So Kentucky went with Johnson and Carter also.
September 28, 201114 yr Southern Democrats, along with Clinton.Good point. I do wonder how a Mormon who was governor in a New England state will fair in KY and the deep south.
September 28, 201114 yr Good point. I do wonder how a Mormon who was governor in a New England state will fair in KY and the deep south. I might be naive, but I honestly don't think the Mormon thing troubles Romney to nearly the extent that the flip-flopping does. Personally speaking (as a Christian), the Mormon thing doesn't factor into it at all, because I would solidly support Jon Huntsman, who is also a Mormon. I'm sure it factors in with a few, but I don't think it does with the majority.
September 28, 201114 yr Good point. I do wonder how a Mormon who was governor in a New England state will fair in KY and the deep south. Did Hillary win the 2008 Kentucky Democratic primary?
September 28, 201114 yr Did Hillary win the 2008 Kentucky Democratic primary?Against a black man in a state still battling many racist issues... I know I quoted a post speaking about the general election but the point just got me thinking in general terms of the South's acceptance of a Mormon from New England. To be clear, if it's Obama vs Romney I don't think any religion or geographical hometown "issues" will matter for Mitt in KY. Edited September 28, 201114 yr by formerkywrestler
September 28, 201114 yr Very much agree on the importance of Ohio. Don't agree much on Pennsylvania. Republicans always claim to have a shot there, yet haven't won the state since GHWB in 1988. Reason I said PA will be a close state is because as of right now, Obama is only beating generic, unnamed Republicans by 1 point. Obama carried PA by over ten points in 2008. That is significant change.
