oldrambler Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 I saw this yesterday and wanted to throw up. Gimme a break! Michael Vick in his post game presser complained that he was being hit without calls more than other qb's, I thought he was going to cry. Vick suffered a broken hand during the NYG game on a hit just after he released the ball. Vick does get hit alot, he also holds on to the football longer than any other qb that I have seen, that imo is one big reason. I personally don't think that he gets hit an more than Rothlessburger or Cutler and some others. For Vick to complain is imo way off, and oh btw he said he wasn't complainig and just making the league aware of it . NFL has gone to lengths in putting in more and more rules on protecting the qb's. For anyone to complain that any qb i getting hit late, etc.. imo is laughable. My feelings on it is that there are way too many rules protecting the qb's. Just lke Jack Lambert said years ago...."why don't they put a dress on them". I fully realize that qb's are the "money makers" for teams and the league but it has gotten to when it comes to qb's, two (or one) hand touch is the NFL. They (qb's) are wearing pads.helmet as anyone else and football is supposed to be a contact sport. So, in the words of C. Carter .....M. Vick, C'mon man!!
PurplePride92 Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 I took it as Vick being frustrated and having his frustrations come out in the press conference. Nothing more..... nothing less. Does he get hit late a lot when he stays in the pocket? Absolutely. Does he get hit more than any other QB that stays in the pocket? (Except for Brady and Manning......but I digress......) Absolutely not and I won't believe he does until ESPN or NFL network provide video and stats to back it up. He just had a bad day yesterday. I ain't mad at him.
MJAlltheWay24 Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 I honestly wouldn't be surprised if deep down a lot of his frustration is for his offensive line, and he took it out on the refs. Not sure many QB's would straight call out their O-linemen. But when he said something about like, "The refs need to do their jobs, we all need to do our jobs." I could see that being a little dig at them. Guy had a rough day and was frustrating...nothing more. And I'm sure he worded things the way he did to try and avoid any type of fine which could have been handed down from Goodell's office for his comments.
dolamite Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 Over his career I think this holds true. Everyone can get mad at the comments he made yesterday if they want, but for his career as a whole he has an argument. Some guys like Brady and Manning you cannot even come up and push them in the back real hard without drawing a flag for roughing. Vick has took more licks than almost anyone in football during his career, he is often getting hit and hit hard. Those hits take a toll after a while and I think thats why we are starting to see the frustration. Other QB's (Brady, Manning, Brees, etc.) are protected by new rules, seems like you have to murder Vick before you would ever see some of the same roughing calls that those guys get. It's almost sick in a way.

The rules are still the rules though and being a QB he is given a lot better treatment than every other player. It is straight up complaining about the referees and really I think he wants to aim it at the OL.
Clyde Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 Smart move by the guy. Any time you can plant the seed it can only help down the road. See: Jackson, Phil
UKMustangFan Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 His complaint holds zero water. He says he gets less calls than all the other QBs. False. Does he get less calls then Brady and Manning? Absolutely, and rightfully so. Those guys are the NFL. They're the money-makers, they're the stars. Vick may get paid like a superstar, but make no mistake about it, he's far from it on the field. Had he said he gets less calls than Manning and Brady, then he'd have a point, but there's about 25-26 other QBs out there that get the exact same treatment as he does. Also, you don't want to get hit so much? Don't hold on to the ball so freaking long, and tell your oline to do their job.
606Boi Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 C'mon guys its very obvious that Vick is recieving late hits. Regardless of how athletic he is or how long he holds on to the ball, the rules are the rules and he is a QB. He needs to receive the same amount of respect that other Qb's do in the league as well. I've heard commentators (Meryl Hodge), say that when he's out of the pocket he needs to be treated like a running back, Are you serious? So mistreat the guy because he's ridiculously athletic and not your typical stay in the pocket slow QB,really? And I hope you don't think that teams don't try to do it on purpose because they do. If they can get away with faking hurt, why not get a late hit on the QB if its an advantage.

I believe once you leave the pocket you are fair game according to the rules, unless you slide.
UKMustangFan Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 You're allowed two steps as a defensive player wants the QB lets go of the ball. Once a QB runs out of the pocket, he's (rules-wise) no different than McCoy or Maclin or Jackson. If Vick doesn't want to get hit so much, stay in the pocket, get rid of the ball earlier, or slide. He's just frustrated because he's not anywhere close to worth the money the Eagles wasted on him, and will never make it through a full year healthy. Once again proof that the mobile "college option" QB won't succeed in the NFL.

They may reaffirm your point though that he simply cannot cut it as a pocket passer.
MJAlltheWay24 Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 After actually seeing his comments at the press conference, I really don't think his comments were all that bad. Am I biased, I don't think so, but I'm sure some will argue that. I don't think his comments were that bad, nor that big of a deal.
Habib Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 It seems like Vick takes more "late" or unnecessary hits without penalty than a lot of other guys, but that's just my gut reaction. I also think the league is horribly inconsistent in calling roughing the passer penalties anyway. My confusion often alternates between wondering whether it's allowable to touch the quarterback at all or how in the hell some of those hits aren't flagged.
EZ Living Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 Just another reason why having part-time referees doesn't work as well as full-time like other pro sports. There is way too much inconsistency in the calls made by these professional people refereeing on the side.

I think the bigger problem is the inconsistency with the calls. Jason Campbell gets a little shove and they through a flag. Ryan takes a forearm to the head and nothing. For the record IMO 90% of the QB's in the league would have drawn a flag on the hit Vick took yesterday. Not saying the Giants defender did anything wrong but the league has come to that.
