Who Is Your School's Biggest Rival?

Featured Replies

Which team do you consider to be your biggest rival? Has it changed over time? What makes it such a good rivalry?

I'll start with Garrard County. Today the biggest rival is Lincoln County, located 10 miles down the road. The counties are basically intertwined and most of the players and fans know each other well. The series was dormant for the '90s but has been reinstated over the last ten years. I find that the older fans view it more like a family reunion, while the players (and recent graduates) have more of a dislike of Lincoln.

During the 1970s, 80s and early 90s, Garrard's biggest rival was Harrodsburg. Both schools typically were in the same Class A district and many times met with a championship on the line. With the closing of Harrodsburg, a brief football rivalry emerged with Mercer County but the series didn't last long.

And one more: Way back when, there was a huge rivalry between Lancaster High and Stanford High. Both schools played for a green (Lancaster colors) and blue (Stanford colors) jug. The jug was recently recovered and there are many who still talk about how both towns shut down for those games.

Glad you mentioned Mercer and Harrodsburg, Mercer and Harrodsburg were probably less then a mile apart, and even though Harrodsburg took home most the "W"s it was a great rivalry, I know I sure miss it and I bet the town does as well, but I believe we had some good outcomes due to the loss

And if I recall correctly gchs there were a couple of crazy games between the MC and GC towards the last couple years before the consolidation.:taz:

I think Mayfield and Tilghman will tell you they are each other's biggest rivals. Graves County might be #1B for Mayfield, and Graves also has a big rivalry with Marshall County.

Other pairs of note in this neck of the woods ... Christian County-Hopkinsville, Murray-Calloway County and Fulton City-Fulton County.

Crittenden County looks at Caldwell County as their biggest rival, but if you ask the Caldwell people, they might tell you it's Trigg County.

Currently it is Pulaski County. Mainly due to their head coach being a Somerset alum and his continual trashing of Somerset in the local paper and the Maroons "little brother" complex. Pulaski is 6-14 against Somerset all time even though they dwarf Somerset in size and according to Coach Hines it is mainly due to the fact that they have to play in the Ray Correll Bowl at Somerset each year.

In the near past it was Corbin due to the 2 teams being in the same district or sub-district in much of the 80's and 90's. Corbin may have had a slight overall edge in the win department but Somerset seemed to get the more important wins in the series in that time.

In the long term Danville was Somerset's biggest rival. There was enough bad blood between the two that the series was discontinued from around 1974 through 1985. Danville has a big edge in the series but Somerset has beaten the Ads convincingly the last 2 years. The 2 teams are again in the same district so it should again be a great rivalry.

How does Hines trash Somerset?
How does Hines trash Somerset?

A few years ago he complained about Somerset's field (which is leaps and bounds nicer than Pulaski's) after the Correll Bowl. He also complained that Pulaski did not get to use a locker room before one of the bowl games even though the local county teams always show up dressed to the bowl game due to the fact that they are both less than 10 minutes away. He has continually called Somerset "a little ole 1A team" which was mocking former SHS Coach Jay Cobb's comments even after Cobb was gone. He cannot play in the Correll Bowl without lobbying for Somerset to play each 5A county school each season. There are more examples of both he and his coaches making sarcastic comments concerning Somerset but you can look those up on here if you want. All it does is inspire Somerset's kids. After the episode in 2007 when there were multiple articles written about Hines displeasure with the Correll Bowl the Somerset kids copied those articles and posted them in their lockers.....since then Somerset is 2-0 against the Maroons. I hope he continues to do it.

I'm curious to hear if NCC considers their biggest rival to be Highlands or Bishop Brossart.

In addition, CCH's default answer is Highlands but I'd argue that overall it's Beechwood.

Boyle County-Danville*

*IMO, Boyle's biggest rival should be Lexington Catholic. That game means more, it usually has the largest crowd and it is usually played twice a year. I am not from Boyle County so the LexCath game means the most to me.

Fairview, I get mad even typing that name, ,Just kidding on the last comment but they are a long time rival plus a district rival.

Other than that it is Russell, no doubt. That series /rivalry was just renewed in football 4 years ago after not playing in football for 30 years. Alot of very bad blood was in the past including some vandlism in the past, probably was one reason why it was ended when it was. The football series was finally renewed and is already very intense and competitive without all the other stuff, from both schools. Hopefully it will stay that way bc it is a great rivalry, schools only a couple of miles apart. Alot of fans/families attend the same churches, some families have members at each school.etc..

For Mason County, it's probably Fleming County; although Russell is in the mix as well. Fleming is only 15 minutes away and is the nearest 3A school. I for one am glad to see Fleming back in the district where they belong.

Currently CovCath, but when I was in school (in the age of stone tablets) it was NewCath. They were both good rivalries because they were in the same district (or sub-district) as Highlands, but NewCath had the added attraction of being just down the road a ways and stocked with kids we all grew up and went to grade school with. Not so much with CovCath.
