Mayfield has to be licking their chops...

We talking Class A only or A and AA here Guru? Regardless, I'd put them up there right at the top, especially if we are just talking Class A schools.

They went back to their roots last night and did a little wishbone action vs. Graves.

HD, I am saying Mayfield has to be thinking they will run all over Beechwood after seeing what happened today.

Oh! Got ya. I don't know, good question. I'll let people a lot smarter than I and knowledgable about both squads to answer that question!

Number one, Mayfield doesn't have Gabe Gray. I have seen Jonathon Jackson and he is no Gabe Gray. Let's see how Cov Cath does next week running on Highlands. Then we will have a better answer to that question.

Big difference between facing a Class A offensive line with only one returning starter and a Class 4A line from an established program in northern Kentucky. I'm still not sure Class A doesn't have a #1A and #1B right now.

I don't think so G. Last year Mayfield didn't really run the ball well against Beechwood until the 3rd or 4th quarter and that was with a senior line.

I am not sure there is a bigger offensive line in the state than Cov Cath's. I would guess they average around 260 with all being between 250 and 290. And not one of them is carrying a lot of fat to get to that 260. They are just B.I.G. big.

Can't agree or disagree. Couldn't part of CovCath's success have been because of their threat of a passing attack with a qb who seems to be pretty good?

I dont know anything about Gabe Gray But I do know Jackson is a load. He is bigger and faster than last year. Mayfield"s line is not huge and I dont really know what Beechwood has up front defensively. Mayfield is more of a defensive team at this point in my opinion with the offence a work in progress. Getting the playoffs at War Memorial is our biggest advantage against Beechwood

Yes, you need that threat of the pass. But Beechwood changed their defense in Q3 because they knew CCH was going to come out running the ball and CCH was still able to run it. Today's paper said CCH's line averages 270. Beechwood has good size but they aren't that big.

What did Beechwood change in the 3rd qtr?

IMO, Mayfield, being a spread offensive team, is not a great running team. Yes, they changed things up in the 2nd half vs Graves and committed to the run game and did it effectively, but, that's a 1st for the year. I think they're effective because they're balanced in the pass and run. The biggest issue Mayfield has with it is Jackson is there only true reliable back. They have a couple of others that can carry it and give him a breather here and there, but, he's the only one really effective running the ball. He had 35 carries fri night and never comes off the field on defense and also special teams. You get 13-14 games into the season doing that and you're gonna be beat and banged, regardless how good you are. Also, Mayfields OL isn't real big and they seem to be better pass blockers than run blockers, but, it is still early in the year, so, I'm sure they'll improve and find things that work for them as the season progresses. Like snake said, there offense is still a work in progress and this years strength is there defense. They're very strong on that side of the ball, but, getting better and better each week offensively and starting to get it all put together.

Beechwood will be a huge challenge for them. They're well coached and I'm sure will learn from this game and make adjustments to correct whatever issues they may have. I don't think Mayfield will take much stock in what happened vs CC. They have alot of work to do themselves then to be worrying what the Tigers are doing and both teams have alot of games left before they can even worry about each other. It's fun, as fans, to anticipate the matchup and it'll likely happen, but, both coaching staffs are smarter than that and aren't going to let there kids get to far ahead of themselves. I do wish they were on opposite brackets though. There's something seriously wrong with one or the other team having to make a 5+ hr drive every year in a semifinal game. Would love to see a neutral site game where both have to travel 2-3 hrs and play it on the biggest stage.

Appreciate the information. Sounds like you think CovCath's offensive line was just too much for Beechwood. I will be interested to see how they run against Highlands this week. Not comparing Beechwood and Highlands, but Highlands seldom overwhelms anyone with their size.

My line of thinking on the passing attack helping the run was; Bir is always a threat to throw and he has several receiving options who are better than average. Seems that would prevent Beechwood from loading up the box, even if they think a run is coming. Mayfield likely won't have that advantage.

But, I know there are folks on here who know more about the how's and why's than I do. I could be more wrong than right.

Beechwood was fine in the first half. The problem is they play way to many kids both ways and they were worn out in the second half. They were a step slow and weren't wrapping up at all..
