In nearly 800 at-bats at Triple-A, Alonso has hit 24 homers.

Look at Stubbs HR numbers in the minors. I think that when they are trying to impress in the minors they try to just make good contact and not try to lift the ball. Notice the change in Stubbs swing at the upper level. I would think that Alonso would do the same thing if given a starting position and playing in Great American Small Park.

Mark McGwire had 48 in over 1000 career minor league at bats.

He homered at about twice the rate as Alonso and reached the majors for good at age 22, about two full years ahead of Alonso and in a much different era for hitters.

Possibly, but it isn't like Stubbs has developed as a hitter at all. And he's still a crappy hitter away from GABP.

Yes, a chemically enhanced era, which doesn't help your argument west.

The mid-1980s?

McGwire was an established power hitter, with several 30- and 40-HR seasons in a crappy hitters' park before he ever became linked with whatever substances he was taking.

He's also a crappy hitter in GABP.

Just looked at his splits and they were better than I thought, overall a crappy hitter though.

Absolutely

What were those guys taking in the mid-80s? I saw McGwire play as a rookie and he was nowhere near the behemoth he became in his later years.

Do you really think McGwire started in the 90's? There were guys taking steroids when I was playing in college at that very time.

Everything I've read is that McGwire started taking stuff after his injury problems in the early 1990s. McGwire didn't bulk up considerably until after that.

The launching pad we know as GABP will add to his total.

His face blew up like a pepperoni pizza in the 80's. A bit old for teenage acne.

Any proof of that?
