Does Mayfield See Anything Short of a State Championship as a Disappointment?

Featured Replies

The fans don't want to put their neck too far out there, but are the real discussions in Mayfield "anything less then a Championship is a disappointment"? And don't give me the "Beechwood is loaded" line, because we all know Mayfield has never lost to Beechwood and Beechwood has to go through Mayfield this year.

Anything less then a Championship is a disappointment at Mayfield ever year, that is the expectation and it has been for the last 40 years. Is Beechwood the favorite? I think so based on who we lost and they return but that does not mean that I or we expect anything less than a title. We will give everything we have to find a way and maybe we will maybe we wont but we expect to

Absolutely. And more importantly, it's the way the kids feel. We, as fans, can shoot off at the mouth all we want, but, it really has no bearing on things. It's the kids and coaches that feel that way and I can tell you, they expect nothing less. These kids have a great attitude, work extremely hard during the season and before and feel like they should win it if they play there best. Of course, any team can have an off night and it only takes 1 once the playoffs start, but, that goes for everyone and sometimes you just meet up with a better team hitting on all cylinders, so, anything could happen, but, I sure like this teams chances.

UK fball fan, the community, parents, fans, ect.. play a important role in the tradition that makes Mayfield Football what it is and has been going back a 100 years. It is no accident that we are in the top 10 nationally in all time wins and have all those state titles or that we have a winning record against all of the big 4-6A schools (except PT who holds a about a 5 game lead on us after 98 games) across West Kentucky from Bowling Green, Christian County, Owensboro, ect. It is expected and as a kid I knew it just as the players do today. It is a source of pride for this little community in the middle of Nowhereville, Kentucky. It is also what seperates us from the Russellville's and Racelands. It is why we expect to win no matter if it is Beechwood, who seems to have the rest of 1A somewhat intimidated, or the Green Bay Packers. Here kids grow up going to the games and see the players as their roll models and they go home and here stories about when their dads and granddads played on a Thanksgiving against Paducah Tilghman and it makes them want to work to become a Mayfield Cardinal. They believe becasue we believe and it's important here, so much so that it became tradition long before any of us were born.

Yes, and the same could be said for every other team in the state. Certainly there are the Mayfield, Beachwood, Highlands, and Trinitys of the world that are expected to win championships almost every year, but doesn’t every team play the game to win? I can’t see a single team, even a program that was 0-10 last year, playing their final game and not being disappointed with anything less than a win and there are only a few teams in the state each year that don’t end their season with a loss. Six of them are crowned champions and the others don’t make the playoffs, so they are obviously disappointed.

I remember the 2005 Class A finals , Now that was a disappointment for Mayfield . Ahem 42-7 .

Now I remember 85 and 86. Back to back runner up trophies for NCC, losing both times to champion, Ahem, Mayfield.:sssh:

Now that is a great comeback! Ouch:clap:

I would go one step further to say it would be a huge disappointed if Mayfield doesn't win it all.

While I think they'll be disappointed if they lost, if a close game that ended up in a loss to Beechwood, that wouldn't be the end of the world. However, if they lost to someone else in the playoffs, I agree, huge disappointment.

Of course Mayfield will see anything short of a state championship as a disappointment. They are the reigning state champs. To date, they literally own Beechwood. It's theirs to lose.

The things that makes me confident vs Beechwood:

1) Beechwood has 10 of 11 starters back on a defense that Mayfield scored 38 on and took a knee late inside the 5 and basically quit throwing the ball against(which was there bread and butter in 2010) the entire 2nd half, so, unless that defense is much, much, much improved, Mayfield will score alot of points..

2) The game will be at War Memorial Stadium where Mayfield rarely loses and Beechwood has to travel 5+ hours..

3) Mayfields defense will be there strong suit in 2011. They lost a few on the interior, but, there secondary, LBs and DEs will be tremendous and while I expect Beechwoods offense to be better, I don't think they'll be able to score more than what that defense will give up. Even if they're twice as good and they score 28(which I think is unlikely, but, best case scenario for BWood), I feel Mayfield will score in the 30s, minimum..

Of course, every game is different and there are alot of variables that can determine the outcome(penalties, turnovers, injuries), but, if all these things are relatively even, then I feel very good about that potential matchup.

We lost some big shoes on offense and might not be as good on offense as we were last year or in 09 and that could translate into less points. So I think the gap narrowed without Bw doing a thing but we do have some advantages like playing at home which has to be hard on Bw. Our mindset with Bw is also a plus. I think they have alot more pressure on them to win than we do which might factor in and we are still going to be pretty darn good and that alone is the biggest factor.

I think Mayfields offense will be very good. As good as last years, no, but, still very good. Running game will be improved, WRs will be as good or better. QB will be good, but, not as good as Luke was and the line has alot of young talent that will likely struggle early but improve to be very good by playoff time. I think they'll still average alot of points and still put up 30+ on Beechwood and I just don't see Mayfields defense giving up near that many. Now, a interception return, punt return, kickoff return, fumbling deep in your own territory, etc. Those are things that could cause the score to be more, but, just from an offense vs a defense, no way the Cards give up that many.

I think after the Paducah Tilghman game we will know what kinda team we have. Greenwood on the road, PT on the road. Right now it's more speculation than anything. This we know, Mayfield is good , BW is good , they are the overwhelming favorites.
