August 1, 201115 yr Why do you trust Range Factor? The calculation of is puts assists into play... Is that really a good measure of whether someone is a good outfielder? I'd say no because if i'm not mistaken Carlos Lee leads the LF'ers in assists this year and he's anything but a good outfielder. Assists is just one of several factors. Lee's range factor is also below the NL average.
August 1, 201115 yr I know some people are all about stats...but fielding stats leave a lot to be desired. Like I've said, I've seen Fred Lewis play the entire season and he's simply not an 'above' average defender. He's not below average either though. He'll make the routine plays that are hit to him. I've seen him take terrible angles on flyballs, line drives, groundballs, etc. the majority of the season. Stubbs does the same thing, but he makes up for it with his speed.

August 1, 201115 yr Lewis is not a very good defensive outfielder. You're right that Lewis has done pretty good vs. RHP, but Alonso could easily have the same production if not better. Why not stick him in there to see if he'll be the everyday LF'er next year? I'm unsure of the situation Alonso was pinch run for but I'm sure it was a close game and they were losing, so that's no different than pinch running for a catcher in that situation. Doesn't mean they can't play defense. A faster player is needed in the situation to try and score. I'm sure Dusty pinch ran a pitcher so it's not like they had to waste another player. If Ramon or Hanigan had got a pinch hit in that situation they would have been pinch ran for too. And you don't complain about their defense. He hit in the 8th spot for Janish and Renteria ran for him. The ran out of position players very early and Arredondo had to hit for himself, but it worked out because he got a hit

That's all you can base it on too because Alonso hasn't been given the chance to play.I've see three years of Alonso's minor league performance, and combined with the universally-held notion that Alonso's defense leaves a lot to be desired, my opinion is probably a little more informed than your hopeful one.
