Radio discussion on high school officiating...

Featured Replies

Listening to 790am in Louisville yesterday to the Afternoon Underdogs show there was dicussion about the current high school basketball betting scandal.

A caller said he was a high school official and that as far as he was concerned, that there would never be a holding flag or similar foul coming from him on teams playing Trinity or St. X.

He then went on to say that it is no secret that southern officials will protect southern schools, eastern officials will protect easter schools and etc..

Now I believe this guy is in the minority but does anyone else have an opinion on this?

I know we have some officials on this board. Any comments?

It would be nice if someone recognized his voice and reported him.

Not saying this happened, but radio shows are abundant with fraudulent callers. Having said that, I do believe that officials are no different than the rest of us and possess biases that could work for or against any given team.

I seen a bunch of blind officials last year but I still don't think that will change the outcome of a football game.

It's my personal opinion that most officials try very hard to ensure the rules are fairly applied to both teams on the field. However, they're human and do err. As to this particular official, all other officials should be angry at him, because he's a disgrace to the profession. And as a Trinity fan (first) and X fan (second), I am disgusted that he'd choose to single out those two teams. It certainly implies the rules are not his concern, but personal bias.

Whatever one's allegiance or bias, or thoughts about any team, an official is paid to ensure the fair play of the game and not try to influence the game with bias. His statement is an ugly example of lack of integrity in doing his job. Unfortunately, after uttering such a statement, he's opened up all his fellow officials to greater scrutiny. And it's not like officials ever get the credit the deserve.

Does anyone know if this ref is available for the Highlands-Trinity scrimmage this year?

Just kidding!!!!!

Maybe the guy was just stirring the pot . There are many haters out there that will do anything to degrade any successful school or football programs .

I have in-laws that ref high school football in Indiana . I shared your post with them . They said it was very unlikely that a ref would show bias toward one team , and if it were true , they wouldn't announce it over the radio . They have been refs for a long time , and they have never even heard of a ref being accused of that . They also remind me that they can't watch every player on the field at the same time . Lets use the holding penalty flag as an example , what one ref sees as holding, another ref might not . Another example is major league baseball umpires , they all have different strike zones , but as long as they call balls and strikes for both teams the same ,it shouldn't be a problem . ( That's my 2 cents worth .)

I do not believe any official willfully ignores EVERY call that would go against certain teams. If they did, they'd not be officiating for long.

I do believe that referees grow familiar with teams in their areas and can be prone to tailor their calls to a particular style. Thinking more in basketball terms, a physical team might get away with more in their home area than in another.

I agree that the caller might be a fake, as an ex Ref, you don't go on the radio and talk like that. Everytime I go on a radio show someone calls me and tells me they heard me, same thing for that caller.

If you want to add to a thread you need to have some substance to your post, taking below the belt shots that make no sense are useless.

That is a great post. You hear about it more in baseball, but in all sports the referee is a part of the game and their influence is apart of it. There is a human element which 99% do their best to adhere to within the guidelines.

Spot on. Bush league. Did the caller identify themselves or just say they were a ref?

Are some refs guilty of a little home court advantage on plays that are "iffy"? Maybe so. But I do not think any official of any sustain tenure is blatantly cheating KY.

Hence, the name.

Hence, the name.

I meant to say it was subconcious. I would never ref a game that wasn't youth or summer league (where one really would have to be screwed up to cheat) but I could see how a ref would give the home team (bigger crowd) the benefit of the doubt if a call could go either way. I think its human nature.

By my post, I don't mean to imply that I absolutely, 100% believe it is an actual ref. But the possibility must be considered that it is, maybe just not one in a position that the would ever have the opportunity to officiate a Trinity or X game.

I'm not trying to say that Trinity & X don't commit penalties, because they absolutely do. But I think the refs we have had are fair in the overall sense, with a few blown calls both ways, when it happens. I can only think of a couple of times that I really questioned the overall officiating of a Trinity game.

But I stand by my statements about how I feel other officials should feel about this caller's comments, if he is indeed an official.
