Radio discussion on high school officiating...

Featured Replies

By my post, I don't mean to imply that I absolutely, 100% believe it is an actual ref. But the possibility must be considered that it is, maybe just not one in a position that the would ever have the opportunity to officiate a Trinity or X game.

I'm not trying to say that Trinity & X don't commit penalties, because they absolutely do. But I think the refs we have had are fair in the overall sense, with a few blown calls both ways, when it happens. I can only think of a couple of times that I really questioned the overall officiating of a Trinity game.

But I stand by my statements about how I feel other officials should feel about this caller's comments, if he is indeed an official.

For the sake of KY football I really hope officials haven't been cheating for the teams playing Trinity and Saint X over the last decade.

I heard this call as well. Within 30 seconds I decided the caller was a fraud. While we have all had our fair share of disagreements with officials, his claims were so outrageous that it was obvious to me that he simply wanted to smear officials. And, if this guy was an official, the games are better without him since he is an obvious disgrace to sportsmanship.

Spot on. Bush league. Did the caller identify themselves or just say they were a ref?

He gave his first name if it was real. I don't even remember it.

Threads like this are why I like BGP so much. Many great posts, I agree with nearly all of them.

I'm guessing the caller was a "plant" to stir the pot. Or just a crackpot who thought he'd call for kicks.

I think most varsity officials in every sport try hard to call the game correctly and take pride in their work. Varsity officials have typically earned their stripes (pun intended). Below the varsity level, I do think you could see some geographical bias, though I think it would be the exception and hopefully very sparse.

Again, many good points thus far. But, I do think we've missed one major influence on officials. Who rates them and how could that rating affect how they call the game? This is the part I think the human element many of you have mentioned comes into play.

If you want to see how biased officiating can dictate the outcome of a game, read "Resurrection" written by Jim Dent about Parseghian's first team at ND. He took a .400 to .600 team of five years to within 1 min 40 secs of an undefeated season and national championship in the final game at SC. Three officiating calls in the second half (two near the end of the game) put an end to that campaign. Read about the calls and how they were made. Officials at all levels have agendas (it only takes a few).

I have always heard of betting lines in the 14th,15th, Regions and some refs making bets on the games. No source, just hearsay from a variety of people who have no reason to lie.

With the current drug trafficing arrests andgamnling ring investigation in the 14th and 15th it is hard to deny that shady stuff does happen...
