Kentucky Mr. Basketball Anthony Hickey of Christian County has signed with Louisiana State University.Hickey led the Colonels to the Sweet 16 title in March and picked the Tigers over South Carolina, Dayton, Butler and Western Kentucky.

Kentucky kids grow up watching SEC sports and many of those who are unable to go to UK often choose another SEC school that they grew up watching.

 

Not many Kentucky kids watch the Horizon Conference basketball so Butler was at a disadvantage in that way.

I've never seen him play. How good a shooter is he? Does he play like Rondo to where he doesn't need to be a good shooter? I know he is super quick and a winner. I worry a little about his height, though.

Hickey isn't a great outside shooter, but he has shown significant improvement in that area over the last year or so. In terms of defense and ability to create, he's a smaller, perhaps slightly lesser, version of Rondo. He won't be able to finish around the basket at the college level like Rondo did, but his quickness, ballhandling and defense will make him an asset.

Watched him play for the last few years a hundred times and he has signed somewhere he can't play. Great high school player and deserved to win Mr Basketball, but has no business in the SEC. He is too small, can't shoot it well enough off the bounce, and dosn't make people better when he does use the drive. Won't finish no where near as well in the SEC due to his size. Will have issues defending bigger guards and that could be a problem throughout his career. Furthermore, signed at a place where the coach is getting fired...that spells desperate to me and I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up back at Western, Murray, Austin Peay, or even an NAIA after a year or two down there. Good high school player...poor decision though.

You seem to have this kid all figured out, not sure why he and his dad didn't consult in you prior to making that long trip to Louisiana and signing! I have see the kid play his entire life and I think he will do just fine. Isn't there a few smaller guards in the SEC that has given Kentucky fits the past couple of years? Florida and South Carolina had small guards that put up good numbers the whole year. Nationwide smaller guards are contributing to teams at all levels to include the National Championship level, Kemba was not a 6'6" guard. My cousin Donovan Kates is 6'6" didn't make him anymore marketable when the scholarships were being passed out. I have seen Hickey in AAU tourneys against the very same guys that he will play against in college and he has done well most times. I'm not saying he is going to be a star but, he can play at this level IMO!

No they didnt consult me but if they would have...I would have explained that it would be a poor decision to sign with a school that everyone knows has a coach that will be on his way out next season. Furthermore, the program isn't in the greatest of shape, kinda like South Carolina who also messed with him, see the connection. That will only hurt Anthony Hickey and his family when transferring comes into play. I agree that being 6'6 doesn't always equal great player but if you have some talent it does. I also agree that there are good small guards out there but Hickey isn't Walker or Boyton if that is the comparison you are attempting to make here. Again, I agree that he won't be out of place in the SEC but he will not be a big contributor based on where he went and what will happen over the extent of his career. He is a good mid major player and got high major recruitment just the same way all kids like him do this time of year...a few guys missed on a couple of kids, a few kids leave programs, spots open up and they go down the list. I mean no disrespect in saying that, Hickey is a good player but not great at the high major level in college. Best case scenerio, he puts up decent numbers on a real bad team at the high major level.

I would have loved to see Hickey play here at Butler, or back home at Western but, the decision has been made and I think he will be fine. In no way am I saying he will be a star or lead his team to the National Championship but, he will compete whereever he goes. I'm wishing him the best and an LSU degree isn't too shabby either if he decides to stay and graduate!
