April 30, 201115 yr You said Nelson and Jones will be on the field more which would make Cobb the fifth receiver next year. Not close to what I said. I'm agreeing with your last statement, not your first. Yes, Cobb will be the 4th or 5th receiver next year. And the following year he can be a solid #3.
April 30, 201115 yr Although I would have liked to see him get to go earlier in the draft, NOTHING better than being drafted by the Super Bowl Champions. In my mind that says alot about your skill set if the SB champs want you.
April 30, 201115 yr I don't know if Cobb will come in and take over but he's easily more talented than Jones or Nelson IMO. It wouldn't be hard to be better than Jones, he'd have one good game every 5 weeks or so and Nelson is hit or miss as well. Cobb may not be the #3 this year but to act like he couldn't move up that quickly is really overrating the guys GB has out wide after Jennings and Driver as far as I'm concerned.
April 30, 201115 yr Again, you don't use a 2nd rounder on a guy who's not going to be anything more than your 5th receiver next year. Obviously they have other plans. Ok so by your logic, rarely will a 2nd round offensive player be drafted and not come in and contribute right away. Let's look at last season's draft of offensive players from the 2nd round (not even including the 3rd and 4th rounds that you included in your argument) and see who made immediate impacts and jumped the depth chart. Dexter McCluster (36th overall) - Impact in the return game, not much of an impact otherwise. Arrelious Benn (39th overall) - 400 yards receiving. According to their depth chart, he's not even in the top 3. Rob Gronkowski (42nd overall) - made an immediate impact. Jimmy Clausen - 300 pass attempts. 3 TDs and 9 picks. Let's be honest. Jimmy has bust written all over him. Toby Gerhart - Had Peterson not gotten hurt, the guy would have been lucky to see 30 carries. Ben Tate - Nothing due to Injury Montario Hardesty -Nothing due to Injury Golden Tate - 21 reception 227 yards.... I don't know what sort of impact you guys think these 2nd rounders make in their first years. 2nd rounders rarely jump up the depth chart, especially past players that just help lead your team to a Superbowl.

If the lockout ends soon enough and Cobb gets adequate time no reason at all to say its not possibly. Talent wise he is already better than Nelson and Jones, they just have the experience on him at this point.
April 30, 201115 yr I think he is a long term answer at the number two receiver spot. He couldn't have hand picked a better team to go to. I'm very excited for him and what he could do with Rodgers.

Aside from the injuries there is still something that happened in which I said does happen and these guys "played". Your saying Cobb will be at best the 5 receiver next season pretty much meaning he will barely see the field. Among the guys you mentioned, Benn was a horrible pick for Tampa Bay in my opinion and got overshadowed by a guy picked in later rounds like Mike Williams. When drafted they expected him to come in and make an impact. If you watched many Chiefs games you would see they love McCluster and use him in a variety of ways, def got a lot of play out of him. I still stand by my point, in the NFL for the most part when teams draft guys in the 1-3 rounds they expect them to be able to come in right away and at least get on the field. All the development guys they choose later on. WR especially because the past has indicated you can get contribution from wide outs picked in late rounds (Marques Colston) and some even undrafted (Miles Austin) as much as you can early round guys who may end up being a bust (Charles Rogers, etc.) . BUT, the common assumption in the NFL is if you are going to pick a receiver in the first couple rounds you are picking one that is going to come in and play for you from day one.
April 30, 201115 yr I think Jones is done in Green Bay because of Cobb being drafted there. Jones dropped at least 5 touchdowns last year including one in the Super Bowl. Through many Green Bay games last year the announcers mentioned that Jones was getting his 'last chance' from the Packers and I expect that if Cobb impresses the staff enough that Jones will be out. For Green Bay to draft a receiver in round 2 tells me that someone is likely on their way out of town.

Benn had Mike Williams taking balls from him. McCluster was always seen as a project. Golden Tate had Hasselbeck and Whitehurst. All that aside, Green Bay is a team that loves to use alot of WRs and guys get an opportunity to make plays early. Normally I would agree with what you said above but on teams like Green Bay, Indy, New England and New Orleans youngsters get more of a chance than normal.
April 30, 201115 yr ^ You can't say so and so were taking balls away from him. That's the entire point of my argument...that they can't jump the depth chart as easily as you guys make it seem. And now McCluster is a project...you guys are proving my points.

And now McCluster is a project...you guys are proving my points. I never used the balls away argument or McCluster as a project argument. I watched the Cheifs play a lot last year and they used him in a variety of ways, in the slot, in the back field, out wide, return game, there wasn't much he didn't do. He is a project in that he will continue to improve, grow and hone what he does best, but he contributed right away last year in Todd Haleys offense. Again, I'll stand by my statement. If an NFL team drafts a receiver (or almost any position player for that matter) in the first couple of rounds they are expecting them to be able to contribute right away and I feel Cobb will do so. If he was taken in the 5th or 6th round then I fully understand your stance, but IMO they are not going to take a guy in the 2nd round whos going to sit behind Jordy Nelson and Jones. Just too much value in the first 3 rounds of picks in the NFL and these teams draft guys who are ready to fill needs immediately and for a team like the Packers they are filling a luxury instead of a need IMO.

And now McCluster is a project...you guys are proving my points. McCluster has no real position. He played just as much tailback at Ole Miss as he did out wide. If that's not a project I odn't know what is. My point is that I feel Cobb is an upgrade over Nelson or Jones. I think Green Bay will find a number of ways to get the ball to him.
April 30, 201115 yr I have always viewed Cobb as a Brad Smith type player. He fell through the cracks recruiting wise and similarly on draft day. I think he will produce early and often.

That is the main point right there and it is where my argument starts and ends. Obviously the front office in Green Bay felt the same way or they would have looked to another position or another player with their 2nd pick.

It doesn't make sense for Green Bay to draft a WR in round 2 without intentions of giving him a serious look at playing time. Cobb has a tremendous opportunity.
