Shelby Valley position

Featured Replies

They wouldnt even give Hillard the head coahcing position. He was offensive coordinator and Napier had the final say on what plays were run. So here was a coach who won 3 state championships having to answer to a guy who, from my understanding played half of his senior year in football and that is the only football experience he had. The reason for all this was that Napier was part of the "good ole boy" network and Hillard was an outsider.

You really think Hillard was an outsider....Come on.......

For SV's sake, I hope any coach that is thinking about applying for this job doesn't read this thread. If it is as bad as many on here are suggesting, nobody in their right mind would want this job.

I didn't start this thread as a means to trash Pike County. I was just wondering what names were in the hat. Anyone want to talk about that??

Just got some inside info. that an out of state coach is being considered pretty seriously for the job...I'd rather not mention who, but don't be surprised when it happens

I was told by more than few SV fans when Hillard first took that job that they wished that SV would have promoted someone within the system their reasoning and I quote was "that we dont somone outside of Virgie caoching the football team" so for everyone i talked to Hillard was viewed as an outsider.

No coach that knew anything about that program would take that job. Hed be nuts to take it.

Is the job REALLY open???

Is the job REALLY open???

Yes

Keep looking to the outside for someone to blame and you will keep missing the mark.

Things will not improve until the supporters of SV athletics decide to look hard at the real problems and address them at the root, internally. Find out where the problems originate and make enough stink until they are addressed.

Blaming the BOE or for goodness sakes, another school in the county is a little misguided and a lot far fetched.

The site based council and the Principal do the hiring at the school and they are trusted to hire the best applicant for each job using an equitable process. If they have been shirking that duty to play politics, then you have your starting point.

You indicate that "now, I think the choice will be made by the site base and the principal" and my question is "why weren't they doing their job and making those choices before?"

I agree with you 100%!!!! Lets quit blaming the community because they support the program just as anyone else does. If your team is winning then they will come out a support but if not then they will not.

Watsup, I am not blaming anyone for the choices made. Yes the principal can go against everything anyone wants, but that doesn't happen a lot. That is if he wants to keep his job. I guess you have to be around it to no it. It is easy to say that the BOE is the best but go outside the Belfry area and they will tell you the truth. That has nothing to do with the success that SV football program has had, but Ben Howard was hired becuase of the BOE. He wasn't qualified and had to many other things around him!

To say the choice comes from the site base is a joke. You must not know how it is at Valley or for that much In PIKE COUNTY!

Making excuses for the site base council's playing politics will only allow it to continue.

We may disagree on a lot of things, but there is no denying the remarkable job this administration (Pike Co BOE) has done in making improvements in the whole system. Academically and fiscally, Pike Co schools have made great strides under this leadership, the likes of which were never dreamed of in the past. Look at the budgets, audits, test scores, graduation rates, etc. of our schools under the old administration and under this one and you will see a steady and rapid improvement.

And for the record, I have a pretty good clue on how it is at Valley and Pike County. ;)

Shelby Valley has the facilities to be successful. If the Shelby Valley people are saying that the BOE has the power to determine who will be that teams head coach and abused that power, then so be it. I personally do not know the details of the process of hiring a head coach entails. Does the BOE essentially decide for Shelby Valley?

I have "made my rounds" in different districts. In my experience, the Site Base has had minimal, if any influence on coaches and staff selection. If you are the one they want, there will be no interview, and someone else fills out your paperwork. It is a good idea on paper, and SBDM does do a lot, but it still isn't strong enough in most places to break through that good ol boy system. Not saying it's right or wrong, I have been on both sides of that hiring fence, just telling y'all what I seen!!

Here is the problem with the SV job from what I've seen. I beleive it was 2000, SV had two great running back (both over 1000 yards rushing going into the 8th or 9th game of the year. P-burg comes in. Playoff implications for both teams and it was senior night. A little cold but dry (none of those mysterious monsoon that hit the football field but leave the baseball field dry). A great night for football. Maybe....MAYBE... 150 fans in the stands. I don't think the senior parents even showed up. It was embarrassing for those kids and I was embarrassed for them. I have never seen SV have good fan support. I'm sure they lose some players to Pville and Belfry, but that's because no one seems to care in their school district. The facilities are great. I'm sure there is a talent base. There is just no support.

Until that changes, I wouldn't recommend the job to an enemy.
