Shelby Valley position

Featured Replies

If that were true, which it is not, then the other districts in the county need to be breathing down the necks of their school board representative.

The entire Pike County School Systems is currently under the best leadership in its history. Look at the educational and fiscal improvements and the improvement of the quality of the entire system under Mr Welch's leadership. Call the Education Commissioner, Mr Wilhoit, and ask him his thoughts on the "powers that be" in the Pike Co Schools System.

I disagree entirely with your assessment. Belfry has commonly been last in line for any imrovements, their new school included. Everyone else had newer facilities, newer classrooms, more up to date technology, newer everything than Belfry until recently. Belfry finally gets a new school and suddenly the "powers that be" don't help anyone but Belfry.

As for the Shelby Valley situation, their actions and decisions, internally, have been suspect. If they aren't doing what is best, or if their decisions are coming back to bite them, why would you want the "powers that be" at the BOE to step in and do something? Not only would that be illegal politics, but it would put the important decisions you are concerned about in the hands of the very people you accuse of helping only Belfry and turning their backs on the other schools. I can't imagine why you'd want that?

Then I don't follow your logic in your previous posts. You say "The powers that be should step in and stop whatever the problem" that exists. Meaning you want the BOE to step in and solve SV's problems. But in other posts you accuse them of dirty politics, say that they (BOE) are calling all the shots already and they won't do anything to help anyone but Belfry.

So why would you want them to step in if they are already to blame?

If you want to place blame for SV's past problems, IMO, you need to narrow your scope and take a good, hard, honest look at what is causing them. Blaming the BOE and using the so-called Belfry connection as an excuse is the easy way out. The problems will not be corrected until they are addressed at the root.

The entire Pike County School Systems is currently under the best leadership in its history.

I don't see how anyone in Pike County can dispute that. :thumb:

Getting Phelps's facilities up to par with the rest of the county schools should be the next move to complete what so far has been a fantastic job...

Absolutely, Phelps should be tops on the list for new facilities, as well as a few of the elementary schools throughout the county. :thumb:

The entire problem rests soley on the community's back, the lack of support is a problem which has been there for years, dating back many moons. It all starts with success, or for the lack of better words, failure on the gridiron. This community needs a kid to reach the next level, have a successful career on the college level, and then return to the community and share the wealth ''knowledge''!!In years past most of the better athletes from the Virgie area excelled in basketball, therefore most of the community's interest is in this sport,example-Todd May,his success on the basketball court has made every parent in this community think that their child is going to be the next Rex Chapman.Basketball is pushed ''AND I DO MEAN PUSHED'' on these kids from an early age by their parents. The administration of the valley school system does nothing to change this fixation either because of the lack of knowledge about football in general. They have no motivation. In the 5-6 years I've watched this program,I've watched several kids that could have been great football players ,never even come out for the team, mainly because theres no noise being made to support it and also the lack of parental and community support for the football program. It's been BASKETBALL BASKETBALL for so many years in this community that they have become football ignorant....and the really bad thing about this is that some of these kids choosing not to play could have gone on to be outstanding football players on the college level.Basketball and football and even baseball go hand in hand now-a-days, and a school system should support all sports ,not just one, and until the community opens their eyes and realize that ,HEY, there's a great sport that happens in the fall of the year and just maybe my kid, or joe's kid,or my neighbors kid might just be the next Payton Manning....let's all go out and watch.....then things are just going to remain the same in the little basketball village of virgie. They need to wake up and realize that they will no longer compete year in and year out in basketball, their future success will come in football if the kids will participate, but what fool would want to bust his hump day in and day out, going against the grain that has grown so stubborn that they dare not mention football in the teacher's lounge or the principle's office for fear of retrobution....well, one guy did this year,he worked his tail off helping our kids, he put a little excitement back in the hearts of the handful of football supporters that aren't afraid of the choosen ones, and just watch what happens to him this coming season. The snakes are crawling....I wish somebody would step on'em. :fight:

I played football at SV my 9th and 10th grade years and this is excatly what happens at that school, and thats why I transferred to Pikeville. I know for a fact that the best athletes at that school are "Heavily Discouraged" from playing football. If youll notice for the most part the football players usually dont get alot of B-Ball playing time for that reason. Ive even heard former B-Ball coaches tell players in a roundabout way that if they play football they neednt even bother coming out for B-Ball(this is not hearsay Ive heard this myself). Not to mention the politics that are involved in the entire athletic program up there not really BOE politics but" in school" politics. The biggest boosters want their kids to play and dont really care how the team does in football. I dont know how many times Ive heard from SV fans that Pikeville has "STOLEN" their best players and since Daniel Harmon transferred to Pikeville this year that has intensified. But the truth of the matter is that the ones who go to SV and know that football is their sport know what their up against and if things dont change the best theyll do is either 5-5 or 4-6 seasons where they are a #4 seed in the playoffs and are going to get slaughtered by a #1 seed and then B-ball season will begin. I also can name at least 2 players that were benchwarmers at SV on the football team and went to Pikeville and STARTED. So i guess they werent good enough to play at SV but good enough to start for a team thats a region contender every year. I hate it for those kids and that community should be ashamed of itself for letting this continue to go on. I guarantee that if a coach ever got SV by the first round in the playoffs they would find a reason to fire him. I mean look at this thread the interim coach just got his team to the playoffs and their looking to replace him?!?!?!How can you have any continuity in your program when this is happening? :madman:

That is two good posts, fellas, thanks for stating the truth.

The million dollar question is how long are the supporters of SV going to accept it before they demand better?

Anyone who raises a stink will be given the cold shoulder and branded an outsider and they will take there kids to play at another school (Hopefully Pikeville for my own selfish reasons LOL). Thats just the way it is on "Planet Virgie" LOL!!! And it will never change.

The only reason why they even have football is because the Johnson Bros forked out the money for the field and they draw good crowd$.

I love going to games there.

Another reason they need to change the format of the Pike County Bowl.

The ONLY problem with the PCB, in my opinion, is one of the 3 county schools in AAD8 has to open up the season with a district game. Every district game means a lot to those 3 schools and it sucks that they have to play one so early.

But lets get back on track here. What about this position? Is it really open? If so, have they began a search or received applications?

I've wondered why the same-district schools that play in the PCB don't just play twice. They could designate the second game later on as the "district game". I don't think there's anything in KHSAA rules against doing so.
