So I'm going to start Golfing and I need some help getting started

Featured Replies

So I'm looking into golfing and have been doing some research on some clubs and stuff but I figured I'd ask here as well.

What would be a good set of starter clubs? I don't want to invest a ton starting out but I don't want a cheap set either.

Anyone have any ideas?

Before you drop a grand or more on a set of clubs and maybe find out that the game isn't for you, go to a place like Second Swing or Play It Again Sports and get a decent quality set of second-hand clubs.

Or get a lower-end set of new clubs at Dick's for a couple hundred bucks or less.

Well see, I used to kinda play back when I was younger but never fully invested and now I'm trying to get back into it. I have looked at Dick's and they have a set of Top Flight XL 2010 set for $199.99 but I haven't decided yet. We have a few courses near me and it's something I'd like to get back to doing though.

Keep your head still, knees bent, and cooler full of beer and you will be in good shape. Don't get your hopes up about being good it's gone to take a while.

Trust me, I know I won't be Happy Gilmore. haha

I would look at ebay for some clubs. Can usually get a pretty nice set for what you would pay for a "starter set" at Dicks or somewhere like that. I could guarantee you would find a nice set of Taylor Made, Callaway, Titleist, etc. for right around a couple hundred bucks. In that range may be models from a few years ago but still excellent clubs. I would recommend Taylor Made if you did find a set that was what you were looking for. I had a set of the RAC's when they came out a couple years ago and they were great clubs, I would bet anything you could find those for a couple hundred now. The thing about golf clubs is that after the new models come out you can get some great deals on the older models. I now play with some r7 Taylor Mades that I got brand new a couple years ago and by now they are already what you would call outdated in terms of new equipment in the golf world, still excellent clubs though. Rock Bottom Golf, TGW (The Golf Warehouse) and Edwin Watts Golf would also be a couple good places to look.

Hope that helps. I would have sold you that set of RAC's for a couple hundred but already got rid of them. As far as the actual golfing is concerned me and my buddies go all the time once the weather perks up so anytime you want to go give me a shout. We normally go to Raven Rock, I'm sure thats where you probably go as well?

I've heard good things about the Adams A3OS. They also have a nice starting price around $250.

Golf Galaxy is a nice place. They fitted me into a nice set of yr old Calloway X-20 irons and will monitor your swings. I got a great deal on the irons and grabbed a couple used Taylormade drivers. If you are over 6'1 I highly recommend getting clubs that fit you. Trust me, I used granny clubs for years, developed bad habits and was the butt of jokes during outings for my hunched over swings.

Definitely the best recommendation. You can get pretty decent sets at places like Play It Again Sports for pretty cheap!

That is very important IMO but I think you should wait until you have played a bit to spend they money to do that.

That's my recommendation. Getting fitted is the best thing you can do. Before spending ANY money on clubs, you have to figure out which clubs are best for your swing. Spending $200 or so on clubs that are not conducive to your swing will not get you to enjoy the game.

I've got some Nike clubs and I love em. I'm also a big fan of the big bertha series too.

It is almost yard sale time, I bought first set at a yard sale pretty reasonable and until I sort of liked it did not buy my first set for a long time, I still buy a club here and there at yard sales. Just a suggestion. JD

While I've purchased individual clubs online, if I'm purchasing a set I go to a place where I can swing several models, get on a machine, get fitted, etc. If you're real tall or real short, don't automatically assume that you need really long or short clubs. It's all in how far your fingers are from the floor.

Also make absolutely sure to try several different putters. You want to find one that's the correct length for your putting stance. Nothing more frustrating to stripe it off the tee, hit lots of GIRs, only to be totally uncomfortable over the putts.

I have the x-20's also. Very nice sticks, the new x-24's look sharp wouldnt mind having a set of those.

Im 6'2 and I got fitted at golf galaxy for mine. I think they added 1/2 inch to mine.
