So there is an "official" book at the table and usually each team has a book as well.

 

When the official book said it was the 5th foul on Prewitt did the other books have the same? If not, did they bring it to the attention of anyone?

 

At Mason, the official book is at the scorers table with the PA announcer, clock operator, Mason stats (for 10th tourney), and Mason radio. They set up another table in the bleachers behind the official table that had the Pendleton County scorekeeper, Montgomery County scorekeeper, us (Montgomery County stats), and any other radio that broadcasts the games. We were letting him know he had the fouls wrong, but it fell on deaf ears. Pendleton County's Coach even looked at his scorekeeper (sitting 2 seats away from me) and ask if Prewitt had 5 fouls and she shook her head No and raised 4 fingers. At least the refs corrected the mistake once it was questioned about a previous call.

Mason Monroe was unstoppable tonight for Pendleton County. He finished the game with 31 points. After scoring 8 straight points at one point in the third quarter, he came off the floor and promptly lost his lunch. Incredibly gutsy effort for Monroe. I can't wait to see how high this kid's ceiling is.

 

Michael Walsh's defense on Prewitt was also huge tonight. He had Prewitt frustrated all night, and Walsh also chipped in 17 points of his own.

 

Best individual "D" I've seen all year. The Prewitt kid is great if he gets open looks but Walsh was in his shirt pocket all night. IMO, the difference in this game.

Not sure how 3 Regional officials can let continue on in the game and not at least talk about it and figure it out when there is a difference in the fouls at hand. I know its the official book that counts, but at that time of the game and the importance of that player to the game, I thought the refs did not handle the situation correctly.

Prewitt was replaced and some rumblings about the foul continued. The next dead ball, I called a Montgomert assistant not, Billy Ray and explained to him where the fouls occured. He stated to me that the fourth foul was not on Prewitt but on #45 Kelley. When that call was made, I also saw Prewitt standing there and I did not see #45. I am 95% positive that foul was reported to the scorers table as #4. Many times fouls get called on the wrong person. After the coach told me this, I called the head official over and told him the discussion and if they thing that foul could have been on #45. They discussed it and changed the foul to #45and then allowed Prewitt to re-enter the game. If I had not explained to the Montgomery coach and the referee, Prewitt would not have been back into the game. I have kept book for over 25 years and never a player has been allowed back into the game after fouling out. Bottom line, Prewitt was allowed back into the game and a great game was decided on the floor in overtime.

Tony Sapp is one of the best official scorers in the state. That doesn't sound like something he would do. I'm guessing there is more to the story.

 

Thanks for the kind words. Nobody hates a mistake worse than myself but just not sure where the mistake was made or if there was one. At the score table you always have players and coaches in your line of site and it makes it tougher to get the officials calls.

Thanks for the facts sumo. If I understand correctly, you struggled with the foul reporting from the officials and had to ask them several times to come over and "tell" you who the foul was on. Is this accurate?

Prewitt missed long lapses of time when he got his second foul and then when he got his third, have never understood the "unwritten" law all coaches go by in taking players out for fouls, this hurt MC. Also a warning at the very beginning of the game to Walsh#10 of PC should have been given along with foul calls for his man-handling of Prewitt, if he is allowed to guard like that PC will go the state tournament

MC didn't lose any ground on PC when he was out but they didn't gain to much either. Prewitt was flopping all night when he got touched he would act like he got hit by a train. He needs to straighten up and just play ball because he is a great player. Crying to the refs only gets you into trouble.My take on the foul. I thought when it occured out by the three point line it was called on Prewitt. He and Walsh were the only two players there. Where 45 came into the picture I don't know. I know Prewitt was complaining when the call was made. Sumo I think you were right in your explanation which I just read after I started this post. The people around me said that the scoreboard had 45 posted for the foul. Maybe that is what messed everything up. The foul was called on Prewitt because no one else was around but Walsh for PC. You had it right.

Which is why we probably had a better line of sight on the call since we set up higher behind the scorers table. When I am asked to keep the clock at Montgomery County, although I love the arena, I have an easier time at the Barn because we set up higher from the floor. The players are actually below us. I struggled with several of the officials calls because they kept making the foul calls one handed. For ex. when everyone thought thay had called a foul on #11 for Pendleton and #11 was not even in the game. The foul was on #10.

I love having a referee that makes the call, positions himself in an unobstructed view of the scorers table around midcourt, and then gives them the call and the number of the player using both hands.

All the bold is true. On that fourth foul #45 was not in the picture. It was a push off by #4 and called an offensive foul. Everyone had his fifth foul written down because he did have them. The play had resumed and IMO the refs did not have the right to put #4 back in the game basing it on their memories from previous plays. There are a lot of calls in a ballgame there is no way that they could change that call after play resumes. If it had been changed before the clock had started back it would have been a different story. Bottom line kid should not have been back on the floor.

The kid done this all night and there was many times the refs where looking right at him. Not once did they call the foul on his acting. Prewitt is a fine player and he would be a much better player if he would just concentrate on playing the game. Someone earlier in this tread commented that Prewitt was man handled by Walsh and I am sure glad they were not reffing the game. Even the double foul on Prewitt and Walsh was caused by Prewitt's holding Walsh so he could not go up the floor.
