I said this in the update thread in OT....

Wow what a game. Now a district winner gets Campbell County for first round they will be a tough out. They will be the runner-up all the winners will want to avoid.

Agree, but Montgomery County won't be a pushover either.

Huge win for Scott...they'll now be able to avoid both Clark and Mason Co in the first round.

 

Hopefully the Eagles get a good draw and can make a run to the 10th finals.

Good win to Scott. Scott now has won districts 4 years in a row, I believe its a new record for Scott.

Mason Co. is just flat out hard to beat at home in the regional tournament.

3rd straight MVP for Kellen Smith. Quite an accomplishment for that young man.

Another thrilling Scott victory in the 37th District Tournament finals.

 

Scott has earned a well-deserved reputation for dramatic last second victories in the district tournament and tonight was no exception.

Campbell County led 29-16 at the half, after having totally out-played the Eagles. Scott scores the first six points of the second half, overtakes the Camels in the second half and build a six point lead, before the two teams battle down the stretch to force overtime at 56-56. 40 points in the second half for the Eagles, led by Kellen Smith who was brilliant in the second half, scoring 25 points on the night and providing a thread-the-needle pass to Haynes for the game-winner in overtime.

 

The Eagles win their fourth consecutive 37th District Championship, and had to dodge major bullets in each of those seasons to accomplish the feat.

 

Congrats to Coach Brad Carr a true competitor whose fire and competitive spirit is reflected by his team!

 

Should be an interesting 10th Regon Tournament for the Camels and Eagles.

Its amazing to see how much one player can change a game for both teams. Smith explodes in the second half and wasn't much of a factor in the 1st. Could have been the reason that Scott was down by so much, plus the Camels played excellent defense and rebounded well. Then you have McGovney in foul trouble in the 3rd and had to go to the bench. Thats when Scott puts together their lead. McGovney fouls out in the 4th minute of overtime but Camels manage to hang. If any one of Camels 5 starters get in foul trouble it hurts. McGovney is one of the better offense players on this team but his defense is where its at and thats what was missing when he was out of the game. This Camels team is exactly that "a team". Very proud of the job Aric Russell has done this year as a first year coach at a demanding program. I though the Camels looked tired on defense towards the end of the 3rd quarter and the 4th. Too many uncontested shots from Scott. My opinion is I would like to draw Mason first round. Great game at Campbell County earlier in the season between the two when the Royals won on a last few seconds shot. Bring on the rematch, it would be a good one.

^ I was very surprised to see Campbell County, with McGovney fouled out, sit back and take the bullet in overtime. I have always been a proponent of placing your team in a win or overtime position, and not in a lose or overtime situation, which the Camels were in and would have been badly disadvantaged in a second overtime.

 

Personally, I would have gone for a steal with about 15 seconds to go in OT, fully understanding that we might commit a foul which would have sent Scott to the free-throw line to shoot the double-bonus. Even if the Eagles were to hit two, the Camels would have had the 15 seconds to go down the floor and either win or force the second overtime. I've often defended this strategy and have been heavily criticiized for it - BUT, I'll stand with my philosophy. I even employed it back when I was a girls varsity coach in the 80's in a regional semi-finals game against Boone County. Unfortunately, Boone hit both free-throws after a questionable clean/not-clean steal, and we failed to convert, giving the Lady Rebs the win. There was no way I felt we could win in OT, much as the Camels would have been up against it in 2OT last night.

 

Each of us have our pet philosophies and I've stuck by that one for many,many years. I'll take my chances and give my team a chance to win - but that's just me.
