Congrats to Brad Carr and the Scott Eagles on another magical mystery tour through the 37th. Kellen Smith is flat out fun to watch. Best of luck to the Eagles next week at The Fieldhouse!

Boy do I miss Terry Boehmker's column's. Reading this brought me back to the golden days of picking up the KY Post to read the sports section.

^ I was very surprised to see Campbell County, with McGovney fouled out, sit back and take the bullet in overtime. I have always been a proponent of placing your team in a win or overtime position, and not in a lose or overtime situation, which the Camels were in and would have been badly disadvantaged in a second overtime.

 

Personally, I would have gone for a steal with about 15 seconds to go in OT, fully understanding that we might commit a foul which would have sent Scott to the free-throw line to shoot the double-bonus. Even if the Eagles were to hit two, the Camels would have had the 15 seconds to go down the floor and either win or force the second overtime. I've often defended this strategy and have been heavily criticiized for it - BUT, I'll stand with my philosophy. I even employed it back when I was a girls varsity coach in the 80's in a regional semi-finals game against Boone County. Unfortunately, Boone hit both free-throws after a questionable clean/not-clean steal, and we failed to convert, giving the Lady Rebs the win. There was no way I felt we could win in OT, much as the Camels would have been up against it in 2OT last night.

 

Each of us have our pet philosophies and I've stuck by that one for many,many years. I'll take my chances and give my team a chance to win - but that's just me.

 

That's probably the best way to defend Kellen...send him to the free throw line. He's shot poorly from there all year and that's his one weakness....he even airballed two in a game a couple of weeks ago. He did shoot pretty well from the line last night though. The Eagles will have to shoot free throws better in the regional if they want to have a chance.

Scott wins it's 4th Dsitrict title in a row and Kellen Smith claims his third consecutive district tourney MVP. Not sure if either one have ever been done in Scott HS history.

 

Not exactly a news flash here but Brad Carr can coach. To coax a district championship, NKAC D1title out of this group and 18 wins is COY material. To borrow a line from the CovCath broadcast team Carr lets his players make plays. Sounds simple but not every coach is confident enough to overhaul his style of play every year based on each teams strengths. Couple that with a POY candidate and this is the result.

I really enjoyed watching this game last night and especially the fire in the Scott players when they were down by 14. I will say even though Kellen Smith is a really good player, he passed up some shots last night and he shouldn't do this. If he can correct this and improve his free throw shooting, this kid will be in a sense un-guardable.

Congratulations to both Scott and Campbell County on fine seasons thus far. I gotta say that despite the loss by the Camels, this ranks as perhaps the most entertaining and exciting boy's game that I have ever watched at Campbell County Middle School. The atmosphere, the game, the crowd were electric! Good Luck to both teams at the regional tourney.

Agree CCFC, by far best game I saw this year.

I agree with you on that philosophy. If you feel you need to win in regulation then take your chances and try to get the steal. If they go to the line then they go to the line. Atleast you get a shot to tie or win it instead of having to play defense on your heels trying not to lose.
