I could start this thread in any one of the high school sports forums, but since it probably will be seen by most in the football forum, I've chosen it. I just got an e mail from my friend, Ryan Ernst, notifying me that he's leaving the Enquirer. He got a job offer that he can't refuse. It was a tough decision for him, as he loves high school sports and loved covering high school sports in N. Ky. But you have to do what's best for your family and given the tough times in the newspaper industry, it was pretty much a no-brainer for him.

 

He did a fantastic job in the roughly 10 years he covered high school sports for the Enquirer. Just a fantastic job. Super young man on top of it. As I told him on the phone a few minutes ago, on one hand I'm really happy for him and his family. On the other hand, I'm really saddened. Saddended that we won't be getting the benefits of his talents any longer; and saddened that I won't be seeing him near as much as I used to.

 

Hopefully the Enquirer realizes the importance of getting good coverage of high school sports in N. Ky and replaces him with someone as talented and interested in high school sports.

Ryan is getting out of the business altogether.

 

I spent some time with him at a football game this year and he told me he had grave concerns about the future of high school sports coverage which obviously would impact him. New sports editor in place.

 

Let's be honest. Sites like BGP and other blogs are shining examples of the change in information flow. I'm old school AND new school. I get info from both the printed word and the electronic word. As a NKY newspaper reader since about 1972 I'm saddened by the demise.

Ryan is an awesome guy and a great writer. He will certainly be missed.

I'm really sorry Ryan is leaving and wish him the best of luck. He's a good guy and did an excellent job with the Enquirer. I always enjoy talking to him.

Best wishes to Mr. Ernst! He will definitely be missed. I think it's safe to say that with all the changes in media trends (and economics), pretty soon there will be very, very limited coverage of NKY sports in the "official" media.

This definitely was sad to hear, when he announced it. His talent and excellent coverage will be sorely missed in NKY. You could always tell Ryan truly enjoyed working the NKY sports scene. But, it is a fact of the changing times, that print newspapers are going the way of the town crier. I wish Ryan all the good fortune in the world, as he takes on his new challenge.

I've turned down similar situations to "stay in" over the years because I knew taking it would be the end of the road on a childhood dream. Certainly not easy to walk away...

What a super person Ryan is, I remember a couple of time's I called him and he was always polite and responsive to any questions I had. Good luck Ryan you will be deeply lost from our N. Ky Family and we wish you the best of luck JD

In the immortal words of Egon Spangler, “Print is dead.” I hate to say it, but it's showing more and more to be absolutely true.

 

I've also heard rumor about a big Enquirer layoff as referenced by GT. And on a similar note, most local new stations have been laying off full-time employees to use interns in their place...at half the cost or even nothing in some cases.
