All "A" Classic at EKU

West Carter (16-5) -- Lawson 15, Eldridge 2, Bond 11, Rayburn 26, Brown 16, Stamper 5.

Bishop Brossart (12-7) -- Saunders 29, Jennings 8, Fardo 10, Tr. Norton 7, Schultz 10, Dierig 2, Trentman 3.

Very uncharacteristic loss to West Carter. Brossart led by 15 points in both halves but West Carter outscored the Mustangs 52-33 in the second half/overtime, and more importantly, scored 16 points in the second half on Brossart turnovers.

West Carter, down 36-23 at halftime, caught the Mustangs at 54-54 with 4:43 left to play in the game. The Mustangs were up to the task, re-opening the lead to 64-57 with 1:21 to go, when Comets Aaron Rayburn and Kyle Brown unleashed a pair of 3-point goals and Derrick Lawson got it to overtime at 65-65 after Mustang Daniel Schultz hit one of two from the free-throw line, but the Mustangs turned it over on sequential possessions.

In overtime the Comets took charge, outscoring the Mustangs 10-4, sending the 10th Region "A" Champs packing.

Mustangs sophomore Justin Saunders turned in another career high performance with 29 points in a losing effort. Aaron Rayburn led the now 16-6 Comets with 26.

West Carter will play Betsy Layne in the midnight special game on Friday.

Tough loss for the Stangs but hopefully a learning experience. Rayburn is an athletic stud for WC. He's around 6'5, solid build, good shooter and likes to attack. I'm sure the Stangs had trouble matching up with him.

Super soph Saunders getting 29 was impressive.

The one-on-one block by Rayburn late in the game was about as clutch defensive play as you're ever going to see. If Brossart scores, they probably win. Instead, West Carter gets the ball goes straight and scores and they end up winning. Just a great play.

Rayburn and Saunders were both a joy to watch last night.

Sounds like a great game. Congrats to the Comets on the win - Betsy Layne will be another tough out.

Great win for the Comets! Too bad they can not fix the schedule so the games are not so late!

52 points in 20 minutes is a lot of points against a Brossart team.

^ That is pretty impressive. Not going to see them blow a lead like that to often.

Only 5 teams have scored more than 52 points in a GAME this year against Brossart.

West Carter is pretty good fellas. They were in some foul trouble in the first half, basically sold out and got by without fouling anyone out even into overtime. Not taking anything away from Brossart.

True. They had four kids finish with four fouls if I'm not mistaken. You just knew a 5th was coming but it never did.

Being down 15 to Brossart is like being down 25 to any other team with their style of play and stingy defense.
