It's officially February and about time to start thinking about district and regional tournament favorites. Here's how papa sees the 10th region favorites.

 

1. Clark County (19-4). The prohibitive favorite, they've taken on all comers this season and have hardly missed a beat. Stenzel, Zollo, and Rogers form the nucleus of one of the top 3 or 4 squads in the Commonwealth, and the Cardinals are currently on a 10-game winning streak; with a benchmark game against Lexington Catholic this evening. Will the Cards and their senior-laden team finally exorcise the demons of the past two years and get over the hump in 2011?

 

The next four teams can be thrown in a hat, so I'll list them alphabetically.

 

2a. Bishop Brossart (11-6). They don't win pretty, but they win. 8 of the last 10th Region All-A championships belong to the Mustangs. Tough to count out a Code-coached team that follows a successful shot selection/defense formula. 'Stangs are allowing less than 46 ppg.

 

2b. Campbell County (13-7). Close losses to Mason County and Scott show that the Camels can play with just about anyone in the region, and they have a signature win over highly-regarded Holmes. As always, there will be a pretty nice team from the 37th sitting at home come regional tourney time, who will it be this year?

 

2c. Mason County (12-8). Royals hope to get Neal Pawsat back into the lineup prior to district tourney time. Treg Setty and Tyler Black have put up multiple double-doubles and Jordan Gilbert runs the point as well as anyone, but Mason County's bench is pretty thin at this point. Can they pull one more miracle out of the hat, or will it be only 7 out of the last 10 trips to the Sweet 16?

 

2c. Scott (11-8). With wins over Dixie Heights, Campbell County, CovCath and Dixie (twice), Scott always puts the fear of God into their 10th Region brethren come tourney time. Kellen Smith is one of the premier point guards in the Commonwealth, and Cameron Haynes hits from distance at nearly a 40% clip. Back-to-back contests versus Brossart and Clark County next week should reveal much about where the Eagles stand.

 

Dark horses - Montgomery County, led by Jake Handshoe and Omar Prewitt should be the second team out of the 40th. The Black Devils of Deming and the King twins had Montgomery beat the other night and have played Mason County and Brossart tough.

I think Clark is the clear favorite to win. Mason should be next on the list. After those two it is a crap shoot. Pendleton has beaten Brossart at their place, beat Montgomery at home, Harrison at home. Then they have lost to Bracken, Augusta,and play Deming tonight. Anyone can beat anyone after Clark. There is only one winner of the region and unless Clarks coach has a brain freeze, as he has been known to do, they will win it.

The Scott and GRC game has been canceled. GRC is looking for someone to replace that game....none has been set yet.

 

Agree GRC is the favorite, not only to win the region but also a state title contender..... after that...who knows... there are several teams that could beat each other on a given night.

Hands down I see GRC as the favorite. The other side of the bracket for the championship is wide open imo.

Unless Clark/Mason meet in the semifinals, we could see the Royals in their 6th straight region final. Would have been neat had Clark County made the regional final Miller's Senior year. We could have been looking at six straight Clark County/Mason County region finals.

They beat us in the semifinals that year correct? We've played them 5 straight years I believe.

 

As for the favorite I think its obvious. But will GRC get the monkey of their back like they were finally able to do in 2007?

Clark County is the best team but don't count out a few teams to look out for and that is Scott, Campbell Co, Montgomery Co, and Mason County.

I'm with you flash. It should be one of the most competitive Regional Tournaments ever until the final game and then Clark beats (insert name) by 20+

2) Mason County

3) Scott

4) Campbell County
