This just in -- the Reds and Joey Votto have agreed to terms Sunday on a three-year, $38 million contract with 1B Joey Votto, baseball sources told MLB.com. This is pending a physical, which is scheduled for Monday.

Wish it would have been longer but that's a good deal for both sides I think. Should have got a year of free agency if you giving him about 13 mil a year when he wouldn't have gotten close to that this year.

It have been nice to buy out a FA year or two in the deal, but this deal is beneficial because it avoids arbitration for the next 3 years. As long as Votto continues to produce he would get roughly that amount over the next three years anyway.

Good for Joey. Nice little bump in pay. He will go from making $45,833 per month to making $1,055,555 per month. Nice, very nice.

Even if they win I think this will be an issue. I just don't see actually filling up the stadium for most games, like actual baseball towns do. The attendance will probably go up some, but I think we will see a lot of empy seats at games still for most games.

The last time they put together two winning seasons in a row was 1999-2000. Average attendance in 2000 was 31,624. Winning solves a lot of problems with fan support. Obviously mid week games against the Pirates won't draw much interest but that happens just about everywhere. Attendance numbers will vastly improve over last year as long as they compete.

I agree, they had a few sellouts this past season and was something they did not do much of at all in plenty of seasons prior with exception to Opening Day. I look for ticket sales to be higher this season at GAB.

Why does everyone think this is a good deal? The Reds owned his rights for the next three years regardless. Now they are paying him an avg. of 12.666 million dollars a year.

 

If he went to arbitration each of the next three years it was estimated that Joey would make 8.5-9.5 Million. Now they are paying him 3-4 Million more than they needed to. Why is this a good deal?

I have made it known on here that I do disagree with this being a "baseball town" anymore. This is not a baseball town like other baseball towns at all. Yes this was no doubt a baseball town back in the 70's during the Big Red Machine days. The people who were around during that time definitely will always think of it as a baseball town too. However things do change, and this is definitely not a baseball town anymore, or at least not by much. Just because it was at one time, doesn't mean it always will be. With the popularity of baseball going down with every new generation, and how football from high school, to college, and pros keep growing in popularity with people. This town has started to change, and it it had a half way decent ran football team in Cincy, I think that would be obvious. Mike Brown just makes it hard for people to completely get behind them. This city is up for grabs IMO, and is just begging for a consistent winner somewhere out of their teams.

It will no doubt be higher, because it was pretty low before. However when you think of "baseball towns" you see stadiums that are prettty close to full for most game. While we will see an increase in attendance, we still won't be like towns that are true baseball towns still.
