I agree that the defensive line is where that game and the previous games were won. Oregon could not get any push at the line of scrimage and there offense struggle because of it. I know they run a a zone read offense but it looked liked Thomas was really confused by what Auburn was doing because his reads were not very good last night. Give credit to the front 7 of Auburn because they took away the running game and forced Oregon to throw the ball. I have to question Chip Kelly on that 4th down call on the goal line, why not put points on the board after you have already faked the punt to get to that point. They have no power running game and it showed last night.

I really thought Dyer was down. Ducks played valiant, nothing to hang their heads about.

 

On the replay I didn't think he was down. I was wondering, though, about whether his forward progress stopped when he just stood motionless for a moment.

At the end of the game announcer Kirk H. was having a cow because Auburn was lining up for FG with about 10 seconds left, the ball inside the one and Auburn having a time out left. He thought, as I did, A. should've run it. Oregon called a time out when they saw the FG unit lining up--their last. A. then ran it once (not really tying to score it appeared), called time out and kicked the winner as time expired.

I wonder if A. initially sent its FG team out in order to induce Oregon to use its last time out. It seemed Auburn's plan was always to kick it..so it didn't make any difference to them if the ball was snapped at 10 or 2 seconds. But it did make a difference to O. whether they had a time out to use after the ensuing kick off. As it turned out there was neither a time out nor a kick off available to them. O also lost its ability to ice the kicker.

^ Speaking of the play before the final kick, what in the world was Cam Newton doing? You could tell the play call was just to take a knee but he tried to run it in with nobody even attempting to block. That was stupid.

Like I said in the update thread Newton was very unimpressive last night. At times he looked like he didn't even want to be there. He missed 2 absolute gimme TDs.

Entertaining game. Oregon's inability to punch it in from short distance with the spread offense was the ultimate difference.

Something looked off. I am not sure if he was hurt or what. Also, you can never tell how these kids are going to respond after taking off 5-6 weeks. It is near impossible to gauge how anyone will perform.

This game was much closer than I thought it would be. I thought Auburn would win by a couple of TDs.

I thought so as well. I didn't think Oregon's defense would be able to keep Auburn off the board as much as they did. They played gutsy. Newton and his receivers missed some big plays and left some points off the board, but I credit the Oregon defense for some big stops.

 

On the flipside, I figured Auburn's front four would give Oregon a lot of problems.

Games like this are what national championships should be. Although in a losing effort, Oregon played good and they were able to move the ball in different ways. Auburn's defense against the run was huge. I figured James of Oregon would have a challenge, but never expected him to have under fifty yards for the whole game, which was likely one of the bigger contributors to Auburn winning.

 

I think Auburn's D-line was the single biggest factor in their victory. They nullified Oregon's running game and put pressure on the QB. They made life a lot easier for the back end of the defense.

 

I thought Oregon should have abandoned the run instead of stubbornly sticking with it in some key situations. With 1st and Goal they ran it 4 straight times and failed to score. Also, they run between the tackles out of the shotgun from their own 1 and get tackled for a safety. The Auburn D-line was getting penetration and wreaking havoc from the get go. I think some pass plays would have been better...give the QB a chance to make a play throwing or running.

This was a great football game. Auburn's line just flat out whipped Oregon and imo this was a main factor in the win. I actually thought that Auburn would win the game by a larger margin. I am glad that it wasn't one of those high scoring shootouts like most were thinking. I am probably in a minority but I would much rather see a good defensive football game than throwing the dang thing all over the field making the scoreboard light up all game. Both defenses played well, especially Auburn. #90 was a beast all night making big play after big play. Auburn obviously had worked very hard on defense during the time off and imo Oregon spent too much time telling everyone how good they were. I am glad Oegon got beat. (Ohio State in the Rose Bowl last season, Auburn in the NC this season = Oregon exposed.). Not really I guess, just had to say it bc that's what usually is said when some other good football teams get beat and some can't wait to jump on it.

I feel for TCU, like Auburn several years ago they did everything they needed to do and were the odd man out. A plus one game would have taken care of that with Auburn,Oregon,Wisconsin and TCU in what would had amounted to a semi final. I do believe that a plus one format will be put in, that is all as far as any playoff. All of that is a :deadhorse: though.

I was so pulling for Oregon!

The game was never anything but a one-possession game. With each team's ability to score quickly, it was always tense. A very entertaining game.

 

What about the umpire picking the Auburn LB/DB on the pass that led to O's last TD? I thought that was a very big play. It turned a 5 yard gain into a big one.

I think it was meant to be a fake, but the o-line didn't execute it well. I don't think Newton just decided to go rouge on the 1 yard line with 11 seconds left in the title game.
