Maybe, maybe not. I was not convinced the platoon of John Jay/Allen Craig would produce. I think with Berkman and Jay as the 4th OFer the Cards are better than the platoon situation.

 

Jayson Werth also signed for 18 million a year. Salaries all over baseball are crazy.

I suspect Berkman ends up in a platoon with Craig. Berkman has never been that good against lefty pitching, and last year he was downright awful.

I agree with that. Plus LaRussa loves mixing it up. I think you'll see those two platoon with Jay being the sub at the end of the game.

I'm not sure why, as a Cardinals fan, you're okay with giving a guy 8 million dollars to platoon.

I said platoon but I mean Craig will most likely be the guy who plays in Berkman's spot if Berkman doesn't play. LaRussa made it clear last night that if Berkman is tired, he's getting the day off. I shouldn't have used "platoon" Berkman will start majority of games.

 

I have no problem with the contract they offered to Berkman. There was a need to add pop to the order and Mo addressed that. Who else could they have gotten that's better then Berkman for 8 million? He also added one of the best clubhouse guys in baseball to a team that was very uptight. Those who are close to Berkman and know him as a player think he'll show much better in 2011 then 2010. Having a full offseason to prepare and recover is essential, look at what it did for Rolen last year, and he lost 12-13 pounds which shows he is committed to getting better. I also think he'll play with a chip on his shoulder, with something to prove.

 

The value of Berkman's defense in St. Louis is being overplayed. This is a team that had 68% of it's outs on the ground last year. The entire pitching staff bought into Duncan's ground ball philosophy. So I don't think that should be as stressed.

 

Even though the Cardinals described their payroll as "leaking" they still are looking to add. Joe Strauss of Stltoday.com just reported the Cardinals are still in for getting Bartlett.

While the Card's pitchers are among the leaders in ground ball outs you're numbers are a little steep, more around 50% as a team. Garica led the starters with 55.9%.

I'm a diehard Cardinal fan and I am still trying to figure this deal out. $8 million for one year??? I can only imagine what Albert Pujols will be asking for. Lord I hope this works out but heck I don't know.

Berkman has had an incredible series against the D'Backs. He's hit 4 HR, with 9 RBI in the series, and is now hitting .300 with 4 HR and 11 RBI for the year. Once Pujols gets going the Cardinals could be scary good offensively. Their big question is going to be if they can get consistent pitching from the 3 guys not named Carpenter and Garcia, and how is their bullpen going to hold up.

He's done all his work in 1 series, I'd give it a little more time to see if he can be consistent

Id like to see a bigger sample size, but it is Lance Berkman.. if he is healthy he will probably be productive. Rasmus Pujols Holliday Berkman is a little bit scary if that is the case...

The Cardinals offense has come alive. As I said earlier, they have the potential to be scary good offensively.
