Class 1A Coach of the Year

Featured Replies

I think Morris needs a plug, Mayfield graduated 75% of their total offense from a year ago and they never missed a beat. Well I guess we will find out if they never missed a beat Friday anyway

That is a bit misleading. They may have replaced 75% of their scoring, but they did not replace 75% of the people which played significant minutes last season on offense. If it were basketball, I would get behind that point a little more. They were the favorites coming in to the season and a team Cardinal faithful has been waiting for... it is not a surprise where they are. On managing those expectations Morris deserves consideration though.

All those mentioned are deserving.

What about Mike Fletcher from Louisville Holy Cross?

I didn't intend to insinuate anything other than the WV program is headed in the right direction under Coach Barth's leadership and the season they had this year puts them way ahead of the expectations any reasonable person should have for them. If my post was misleading about that, then it wasn't meant to be.

Having decent athletes doesn't equate into a winning football team. We have a fundamental difference of opinion about what it takes to build a winning football team from scratch. I am not going to argue with you about it because we are pretty far apart in our thinking and I don't see any likely reconciliation will come from it.

Agree again. Coach Barth's first season he was 2-8 but was 8-4 the next. The offense went from near the bottom in the state to near the top in rushing. Walton went from not winning a district game to 4-1 in the district. To say that anyone could have done the same is laughable and shows no coaching IQ. He deserves consideration.

These two guys would get my vote

Walton - Verona Coach- district runner -up

Bracken Co. Coach - made the playoffs

Coach Barth took over the Walton job in 2009 just in time for the season to start. Coaches and players were not on the same page for a majority of the 1st season. The coaches and players then got an entire off season and regular season to grow. They did quite nice. Coach Barth along with his staff are on the same page. Coach McMillan stepped up big time for the middle school program mid-season to prevent impending mutiny. Coach Barth, varsity coaches and middle school coaches are on the same page now. It will pay huge dividends for Walton into the future. All of the staff deserve big props for the time and dedication to get the school and City of Walton excited about their team.

A guy has gotta try to put in a plug for his boy :thumb:

I am all for coaches with the best team winning the award. It is difficult handling all the pressures of being the hunted.

Here is a list of the Kentucky football coaches association district coaches of the year.

Guys in the profession think these guys did a good job for various reasons.

Joe Morris Mayfield

Mike Fletcher Holy Cross

Rick Hornsby Ludlow

Craig Foley Frankfort

Ray Graham LCA

Jerry Herron Williamsburg

Mark Dixon Hazard

Chris McNamee Pikeville

Out of the previous list I would venture to say Joe Morris from Mayfield. Even though Beechwood hasn't had a "dominant" team in a few years, Mayfield got the better of them. I think the winner of an award like this should always go to the best coached team and not too many teams can say they were even competitive with Beechwood, let alone beat them soundly.. People have said year after year after year that Beechwood is a measuring stick for 1A football.. Mayfield has pulled out the yard stick...

For some reason my whole post didn't make it and those are only the 1a coaches.

Papa Pigskin hit the proverbial nail on the head. If you look at Mayfield, how many players from their State Championship caliber team came back this year? Not to diminish their accomplishments, but it definitely makes the path easier. Ray Graham got a late start in rebuilding a State Championship caliber team as well as the coaching staff! To bring LCA within :24 of going back to Bowling Green, and doing it with class and a servant leader mentality the whole way.....incredible. Anyone that keeps up with LCA can tell you that the impact he has had on the program, on and off the field, is only slightly reflected in the win-loss column. Coach Graham is getting it done the right way and is the kind of coach that you hope your kids gets.

A lot of the top names will get mentioned, but one that comes to mind for me who has done a heck of a good job is Walton Verona's Jeff Barth.

Coach Barth turned the WV program around from 2-8 in 2009 to 8-4 in 2010 in just the 3rd year of football for the school.

They had several nice victories and were one of the most improved teams in Class 1A.

Nice call Watusi, I was thinking the same and the Coach for Bishop Brossart a close 2nd..

Coaches Morris, Graham, and Barth would be my top candidates.

Not 100% sure what McMillen and the previous middle school season has to do with this thread, but seems like you needed to get that off your chest.. Assuming you heard this story from the horses mouth right? Boone Co. schools seem to do just fine when thier pee-wee kids come to high school and they are not even affiliated with a school, so that I think is a moot point anyway. And yes, WV had a good season and they will continue to do well in 2A from what the district shaped up to be, not a ton of competition until the playoffs..(Gallatin, Trimble, Owen, Carroll)... Mayfield's coach has the best argument here for COY, although next year thier district is soft (both Fultons a combined 1-18) except Russelville dropping two classes (interesting)....

I agree, Coach Barth did a great job with Walton Verona this season.......
