October 18, 201015 yr Not who Kentucky needs at all. In a time when many Kentucky employee's are being sent home without pay on forced vacation Farmer and his buddies are out golfing and touring beaches on tax payers dime. http://www.kentucky.com/2010/10/17/1483323/farmer-aides-took-eight-day-caribbean.html
October 18, 201015 yr The last 2 paragraphs sum up the entire article: "The danger for the David Williams-Richie Farmer ticket is how much they talk about the need to cut state spending," Gross said. "That opens them to charges of hypocrisy when voters say, 'But, wait, you spent all this public money on trips to the Caribbean and new cars for yourself. Why should I take you seriously?'" "Ten thousand dollars isn't necessarily a lot of money for state government, which deals in the many millions of dollars," he said. "But it's a lot of money to most of us. The average Kentucky voter would love to have that much money for their own Caribbean vacation." Personally, I don't know how far $10,000 goes in the state government. I also do not know Farmer's budget nor do I know how much money his department brings in for the state. Doesn't this type of stuff happen everywhere? We elect people to represent us. They put on a good show, and suddenly we're appalled by what it costs. I understand that the economy is what it is, but who's to say that the trip didn't build a few relationships which could help the Commonwealth in the future?
October 18, 201015 yr      A party (& the drones that support it) that spends TRILLIONS of dollars is suddenly concerned with 10K....   What a bunch of buffoons!
October 18, 201015 yr The article didn't say whether or not Richie was in the starting lineup or whether or not he was going pro
October 18, 201015 yr Pelosi spent close to 3 million on private jets and over 150 thousand on booze this year alone...
October 18, 201015 yr The albatross around Farmer's neck as far as his political future is concerned will not be this Carribean trip. It will be his running mate, Mr. Williams.
October 18, 201015 yr I am having a hard time understanding how anyone can defend this. If this had been Beshear he would be crucified. Farmer should be ashamed. I was already having a hard time voting for the Williams/Farmer ticket but this just sealed it, no chance I will vote for them now. I don't care if it was only $100. With the problems this state if facing he either shouldn't have gone or went the day before, did the min, and left when it was over.
October 18, 201015 yr Ehhh, Richie will probably get a pass from most voters. It's perhaps the No. 1 perk of being on scholarship for life.
October 18, 201015 yr Definitely a stupid and indefensible thing to do on Farmer's part. But I'm surprised that others are surprised by this behavior, as this kind of thing is the norm in politics.
October 18, 201015 yr Definitely a stupid and indefensible thing to do on Farmer's part. But I'm surprised that others are surprised by this behavior, as this kind of thing is the norm in politics. Maybe if more people would be surprised and upset about it it would not longer be the norm. But when people defend it by saying the other side spent more you have politicians who aren't afraid to do it.
October 18, 201015 yr Pelosi spent close to 3 million on private jets and over 150 thousand on booze this year alone...Source for those figures?
October 18, 201015 yr Maybe if more people would be surprised and upset about it it would not longer be the norm. But when people defend it by saying the other side spent more you have politicians who aren't afraid to do it. Oh, I've been plenty upset about it--and am upset about this. But after seeing this happen dozens and dozens of times--from the White House all the way down to the sticks of Kentucky--I've decided it's not going to change. That was my position when Michelle Obama took her lavish trip this summer. Upset? Yes. Surprised? No. Thread-starter on BGP? No.
October 18, 201015 yr Pelosi spent close to 3 million on private jets and over 150 thousand on booze this year alone... You need better sources. Nowhere near being true on either point. http://www.factcheck.org/2010/03/pelosis-party-plane/
October 18, 201015 yr Oh, I've been plenty upset about it--and am upset about this. That was my position when Michelle Obama took her lavish trip this summer. Upset? Yes. Surprised? No. Thread-starter on BGP? No. The way I see there aren't plenty of people upset about it because these people continue to get re-elected. I blame most of that on excusing it by saying the other side did worse. Until voters send the message your right, it will never change.
