Too many times I have witnessed the team that is up big go to the 3s and 4s, and the team getting trounced keeps their starters in. And yeah the losing team has a little success, and guess what, they start running their mouths and acting like they actually accomplished something. Yes I would pull most of my 1s, but I'm not pulling the 2s until I see some of the opponents 1s off the field. if the opposing coach wants to leave his 1s out there then he gets no pity from me. Pour it on them. I still say if people think its degrading to have their team whipped by another, either get better, or let's put in a mercy rule, and we wouldn't have to listen to all of this crying. 50 point lead and we're done. JV can strap it on tomorrow morning.

Folks, I think I've used too much sarcasm in my posts and I apologize. Do try to show some sportsmanship and compassion.

Whose job is it to call of the dogs? If the losing team won't pull its starters, why should the winning team do so and send in freshmen and JV players against a group of upset varsity players that have had their hats handed to them?

 

I've seen injuries and cheap shots associated with a losing team keeping their starters in.

 

Once the losing team starts subbing and concedes, then you pull your starters and go conservative. But not until then.

 

I could not disagree more. Why does the losing team have to take their starters out? If a team is up by 40 or something, then obviously that team is just that much better than the other team. So why should the better team keep their starters in until the other team takes them out? That is just bad sportsmanship, and honestly just plain dumb. You really want to keep your starters in and risk injury to a starter in a game you already have won, just because the others have their starters in still?

 

I have no problem with a team basically keeping their starters in no matter what the score is in the 1st half, because that better team still needs to get some work in with their starters. However after that in the 2nd half there is no reason to keep the starters in. Its good sportsmanship and just smart. There is no reason for the losing team to have to take theirs out too. Its a chance for that losing team to try to get some confidence back for the next week, and work on getting better for the future. Now if a player on that losing does try to cheap shot someone, then that losing teams coach needs to make sure they take that player out. However other than that, there is no reason why the losing team should have to take them out.

Now I do agree with you that a team should keep their number 2's in as long as the other team has its starters in still. However no reason to keep your starters in if your up 40, just because the losing team has their starters in too. That is just bad sportsmanship and just plain dumb to do.

I think the entire first half is fair game. You have to get game speed reps to get better. I also don't mind allowing the number 1's to play a series or two in the 3rd. But once the clock is running I want my guys on the side line for the 4th to keep from getting hurt.

Kind of my sentiments as well.

Funny. This whole thread was started by someone complaining about Boyle County and most people on here seem to think once you get to a running clock is when you start to sub out your starters. Funny. Boyle has had 1 running clock this year and yet the JV team has still finished the last few games we have played with the exception of the Danville game I believe. Even more, we beat West Jessamine last week and our JV qb played the whole game and folks are still complaining about Boyle County. Starting threads about our lack of class and everything. I just don't get it.

The sad truth is that many simply look for excuses. The norm has shifted from a sense of personal responsibility to that of entitlement. As a society, in general, we expect others to do for us - to make sure we are taken care of so that nothing "bad" happens. Rather than working harder and putting in the effort required to be successful, we simply try to do the very minimum and expect maximum results. It's an attitude that seems to be taking over in today's society.

 

And. many times that attitude starts at home.

 

A bad attitude can take a great player and make him or her ordinary and can take an ordinary player and make him or her useless. Bad attitudes permeate our society today. Seemingly everyone is walking around with the proverbial chip on their shoulder.

 

Parents who believe that their son or daughter should be in the starting lineup or receiving more playing time often convey a bad attitude, giving their child the green light to display the same bad attitude when dealing with their coaches or teammates. Instead of using the situation as a teachable moment to build character, they give the go ahead for their son or daughter to point to everyone else as the source of their problems. And, as that attitude becomes ingrained in character of their child the chances of success later in life becomes smaller and smaller.

 

Rarely do we hear parents telling their children that they need to work harder, take things in stride or be prepared when their opportunity comes. Instead, children are bombarded with messages of how they are being treated unfairly, how they are being done wrong or how the coach just has it out for them.

 

The funny thing is that when it comes to those complaining about teams running up the score, it rarely comes from those who actually participated in the game. Most of the time it comes from those who took no part in practice or preparation. Rather, from the same parents and fans who, in some cases, are the root of bad attitudes.

 

Most people want something for nothing.

 

They want success without hard work. They want glory without sacrifice. They want accolades without justification. And, when these don’t come they fall back on the excuse of how they never had a chance.

 

The fact is that there are instances where teams run up the score without cause. In other instances it can't be helped. Right or wrong is really not the question that needs to be answered. How we react to the situation is of far greater importance than the situation itself.

 

Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you react to it.

Where have they gone? Right here in Russell, Ivan would never run the score up. Friday night at Lewis Co he had the third string take a knee on the two yard line. Class act!

 

I just looked up "Class" in the dictionary, and I saw a picture of Ivan McGlone :thumb:. Some of those Russell teams could have scored 150 points on some teams over the years, but he always shows respect to his opponents.

So now we're worried about a bunch of 16 and 17 year old kids running their mouths because they had some success in a game? Wow.......

:thumb: I will say that if the game gets out of hand too far, I think a team should make sure everyone has gotten in if it's safe to do. Many times when a game is that lopsided, the bench guys hold their own against the other teams varsity. So what if the opponent scores, you won the game by a large margin?

How about Highlands winning streak. Now this is ridiculous. It's absolutely meaningless as well as a purely vainglorious achievement.

 

How so, Mr. Thesaurus? They're beating the teams that they're scheduled to play, as well as those they have to play to win championships. Should they just throw a game to give meaning to the others?

I have know problem with a team trying to get to the 45 point lead and wanting a running clock. I have seen many teams (besides Boyle) get up by 45 points or more and sub but the other team not. The other teams 1st team could not even stop the 2nd and 3rd team of the winning team. After the game the winning team is then accused of running up the score. Are you then going to tell your 2nd and 3rd teamer not to play and just lay down.

Can't wait to see Bell Co. take Boyle down, and that will happen!!

It might happen. Bell County is on our level this year as they always are. Possibly even higher than our level. Hopefully we'll find out if we both teams are fortunate enough to meet in the playoffs. Nothing is guaranteed after round 2.

 

I can't wait to see Lafayette take down Boyle County also. Oh wait....oops.:isurrender: My fault.:walk:
