Programs that win with Class (Where has that gone?).

Boyle Co up 35-0 with 2 min let trying to score or kicking and onsides kick at after the half up 28-0. You never saw that 7-10 years ago.

Pour it on em. Get to a running clock, then put it on cruise control. Anyone disagrees then I want to hear your argument against a mercy rule.

Whose job is it to call of the dogs? If the losing team won't pull its starters, why should the winning team do so and send in freshmen and JV players against a group of upset varsity players that have had their hats handed to them?

I've seen injuries and cheap shots associated with a losing team keeping their starters in.

Once the losing team starts subbing and concedes, then you pull your starters and go conservative. But not until then.

I think this depends on the team your beating. In some cases, the JV/Freshman players are as good as the losing teams 1st teamers and it will be good experience for those players.

These kids practice and prepare for hundreds of hours a year for the opportunity to play a "MAXIMUM" of 48 minutes a week. Your performance against an opposing team is better than any practice or speech a coach can give. A person should be able to reap the rewards of hard work. I am not saying score 80 if you can, but these kids are competitors and deserve and have earned the opportunity to compete.

You talk about the shortage of officials? Look at the shortage of players. Some schools just can't get the kids out to play anymore. Why? Because it's physically and mentally demanding, hard work. I'm sorry. I am not taking an opportunity to compete away from one of my kids because my team is better than yours. These kids have worked hard all year long to make themselves better and, unless I have the roster to so, I am not benching him when he performs to level he is capable of just to make you feel better. Every team can be beat and there is always room for improvement. Allow your kids to take the loss as a motivation to get better.

There are some classless wins out there, yes. But as I said earlier, sometimes you just don't have the roster to call off all the dogs.

Oh. And to answer your question. The programs that win with class are off somewhere with the fans that just watch the game. Everyone is a coach nowadays. Come put in the 40+ hours per week to make the decisions on Friday nights.

How about when the running clock starts the team should start to remove their starters. They should get their underclassmen experience which means they can pass because the clock runs anyway. The obvious was to prevent this from happening is to get better.

28-0 is not a safe score in today's world where teams run wide open passing-oriented offenses. Scoring 21 or more points can be done in minutes with long passes and fast running backs. Maybe 28 points was safe in the days of run oriented offenses.

Until it gets to a running clock, you keep the pressure on. No one should apologize for keeping up the pressure until then.

Absolutely. Let's not just win the game by 40 points, let's take every shred of dignity away and make the other team and coach cowl down before us so our team and fans can feel good about themselves for destroying some pathetic team that had the audacity to show up on our schedule.

Compassion and sportmanship is shown by calling off the dogs once the victory is secured and is not a response to what the opposing coach is doing. If I'm the losing coach I tell my players we're going to keep fighting and if the jerk across the field needs to score 75 points to please his ego and that of his fans, so be it. We're going to walk off the field knowing we gave all we had regardless of the score.

Any good coach should know when the score has reached a safe point and victory is assured. No one is suggesting subbing before you reach your comfort level.

Only your starters work hard enough to deserve playing time?

I've watched Coach Wayne Mills and his Knox Central team build big leads in the first half several times this year and no starters played even a single down in the second half. He doesn't care about forcing the other team to concede or give up. He just wants to win, reward and improve his younger players, and get better for the next game with a healthy team.

If you think I'm putting my freshmen team in against your varsity so you can "work on some things", you're crazy. At some point, it stops being a sportsmanship issue and turns into a safety issue. I've seen losing teams keep their starters in so they can manhandle the JV and freshmen players they are now going up against. When you realize there is no shot at winning, pull your starters and I'll do the same to ensure the game finishes as a JV game. It has nothing to do with running up the score.

Nope. They all get playing time. I 'm just not going to do a full substitution so your varsity can throw my JV around. They get in with support. Very few JV players have the strength and experience to safely or effectively play an entire half of varsity football. They get beat up enough through the week. I don't need to put them out there for more punishment. They have a JV schedule that they look forward to and do well in. The JV (like the losing team) need to experience first hand what they need to improve on and see how much better they can get.

Too many times I have witnessed the team that is up big go to the 3s and 4s, and the team getting trounced keeps their starters in. And yeah the losing team has a little success, and guess what, they start running their mouths and acting like they actually accomplished something. Yes I would pull most of my 1s, but I'm not pulling the 2s until I see some of the opponents 1s off the field. if the opposing coach wants to leave his 1s out there then he gets no pity from me. Pour it on them. I still say if people think its degrading to have their team whipped by another, either get better, or let's put in a mercy rule, and we wouldn't have to listen to all of this crying. 50 point lead and we're done. JV can strap it on tomorrow morning.

Where have they gone? Right here in Russell, Ivan would never run the score up. Friday night at Lewis Co he had the third string take a knee on the two yard line. Class act!

I respect your opinion a great deal Coach.

At what point do you see your last statement as the guiding judgement in a game? In other words, is there a magic score or place for that to happen?

I also wonder if the "running clock" rule is part of the fuel that drives this "fast break" approach. I can understand as a coach, if you can get the clock running, you can more liberally sub and keep your starters from getting hurt. So does that drive a coach to do what some are accusing others of doing? :idunno:

Should the rule be changed to 35 points at anytime starts the clock and if it gets below 35 the clock can go back to stopping at the appropriate places? :idunno:

I think the entire first half is fair game. You have to get game speed reps to get better. I also don't mind allowing the number 1's to play a series or two in the 3rd. But once the clock is running I want my guys on the side line for the 4th to keep from getting hurt.

Where did I say anything about "working on some things"? If the team you're destroying by 50 points has so many big, bad starters that it's a safety issue, you should at the very least be able to sub down toward a more competitive level. Also, if team A is beating team B's starters by that much, why would the coach of team B want to put his subs in before team A subs? How does he know you'll sub at that time? You may be trying to get a state record.
