Can anyone please give solid information on why Mayfield is being considered the best 1A team in history? They could make run and win 2A or 3A titles. I am not saying they are not that good, but to people like me that live east of 65, all we see is that minus Paducah Tillman their opponents are 6 - 22. Does scoring 75 points on a 13 player team mark their place in history??? Does beating PT by three in over time put them up there with X and T? Again just not seeing what everybody on this blog or Kentucky Preps is seeing that has people making statements like this week after week, please educate me!!!!!

Good posts and good question. I am not in this group of believers but this team could prove to be that good. Based on what they returned from a very good team last year and the way they have looked so far this year is the reason some feel that way and make no mistake that this is a very good football team but for any team to get labeled as the best or one of the best it requires looking at a larger body of work than 5 or 6 games into a season. Some of the teams they have played will prove later on to have been pretty solid teams despite poor showing so far. I would like Mayfield's chances against NCC but I have not seen them play just as walter has not likely seen Mayfield play. Only time will tell but they are real good

Let's just say they are ONE of the best smaller programs (A and 2A combined) in KY history, I'm talking about the program on the whole, not any one year. Their dominance in smaller school football goes back many decades, not just one or two. I'm not speaking out of school here, just look at the number of wins over the last CENTURY.

I don't think anyone on this thread is disrespecting what Mayfield has done over the years. Their history stands on its own, whether the current team goes 0-10 or 15-0.

Yes they would have a great shot at winning the 2A or 3A state title!!! But not the 4A or 5A as one or two have said.

Mayfield fans don't worry!! Most everyone knows that Mayfield has been I would say the team of the century in class 1A/2A. The State/Regional/District/State runnerup finishes all prove it. Anyone that has followed Kentucky high school football for decades knows this!! But we live in times of what have you done for me lately! Sorry to say. I have to say though. I was out of the country alot in the mid 70's and most of the 80's so I missed alot of what you had done. Sorry!!! But I'm a history buff. I found out quick about your football in those times!!!

I agree with you Jim. Mayfield would be in the top 3.

Again, Mayfield no questions of strong history. But based on what would someone post "go ahead and give them the 1A title ". Again opponents are 6 - 22, with not one having a winning record (minus PT).

 

There is no disrepect in this question. It is a legitimte question, but from what I have seen I should "just know". Well I guess I will just take the word of these bloggers. I was just looking for a few quick points about team that gives any merit to the level of supremecy this (2010) team has achieved.

No doubt about it there are some teams that could argue about the statement I posted. Danville has been good for decades. And they could argue about who was better for the past 50 years and more. This is a proud and very well know school when it comes to football. One of the top three or four in the state I'm sure. I don't have all the facts when it comes to how many state championships, regionals and district championships all the teams in the state combined have won. I don't think Beechwood has been around long enough to be put in this conversation. Beechwood has been the best (IMO) the past twentyfive years give or take a few years. Danville, Mayfield and maybe one or two others have been very good for five or more decades. I believe Mayfield though has won at least seven or eight State championships. And been state runnersup I don't know how many times. And I'm sure countless district and regional championships. IMO All three of these teams have been the best in their region. I was given some history about state championships when it comes to Mayfield. And how good they have been the past 100+ years. lol I've been following kentucky high school football for about 40+ years. I wasn't around for about 14 years. (Out of the country most of these) But the MAYFIELD faithful let me know what they had done for those years!!! lol

When it comes to small school dominance, I don't think anyone compares to Beechwood.

 

11 state titles in 20 years speaks for itself. I honestly can't remember the last time they didn't make it to the state semi's. Maybe when Newcath was in 1A? Beechwood beat some very good Newcath teams when both were in 1A as well.

 

Mayfield is a fine program and also has a storied history, but some of you are selling some other teams short. Beechwood and Danville have both had some pretty good teams over the years that were likely better than this years' version of the Cards.

From everything I've read on here and elsewhere, Ryle and CovCath ain't exactly wowing people. And Madison Central is way down. I have a great deal of respect for the NewCath program having grown up in NoKy, especially the fact they take on all comers in the area regardless of school size. But could it be that they've been flattered a bit by their opposition?

 

How many 2A teams have you seen outside of NoKy? Part of the problem with the NoKy groupthink is that most folks from NoKy think driving to Walton is a long trip, so there's little frame of reference when it comes to everyone else outside I-275.

 

Because of the line of work I'm in, during the fall, I have the chance to see a lot of football.

 

This years' Newcath team is the real deal, regardless of competition. I promise that. I think when the Breds get in the playoffs and start making some road trips, everyone will see what myself and VOR are talking about. BTW, Voice of Reason is a Beechwood fan which is a huge rival of the Breds.

Guessing most glossed over the part where I said one of the best, never said they are numero uno. I think there are a few courses of thinking in this thread. One poster made it sound (tongue in cheek) that this CURRENT Mayfield team, for whatever reason, was the best in 1A history... (ludicrous). Others where discussing the best in the modern era, while I was simply stating what has taken place since Mayfield high school fielded a football team 100 years ago up until the current time. Is all of this speculation, yes. Does anything that has been written here matter to the players that suit it up every Friday night, no way.

What makes you think that this team could not beat any or all schools this year? I am very curious what makes people think that because kids go to a 1a or 2a school that they are less of athletes than those attending 6a? Athleticism is not only bred in big communties, and I know they say talent comes in numbers. But Monroe dresses 70+, and Fulton dressed 13. So does this mean that our 11 on the field is any more athletic that them? Talent is found all over the state, just not in larger schools. As far as Newcath, they are good, but saying they could not be beat by Mayfield, thats to funny!!!:notworthy:

To answer the original thread question ...

 

If Mayfield were in Class 3A, they would have to get by Paducah Tilghman and Union County in the district and, most likely, Louisville Central in the semifinals just to get to the championship game. The Cardinals beat Tilghman in overtime in a game that obviously could have gone either way.

 

If the Cardinals were in Class 2A, they would have to contend with Murray and Caldwell County in the district. Caldwell beat Mayfield last year in what was clearly an upset. Then you're talking Owensboro Catholic in the region and someone like Monroe County or Danville in the semifinals. And that's not factoring in the finals opponent ... let's say, Newport Catholic.

 

Could the Cardinals survive those roads? Perhaps, but the odds would be against them.

 

The road is tough in Class A, too ... Mayfield could have to beat Louisville Holy Cross and Beechwood on the road in back-to-back weeks to get to Bowling Green.
