Two questions about CovCath's scheme for this game:

 

CovCath seemed to forget that Volke was on the field only to be reminded every once in a while when he ripped off a big play. Yes, B'wood has other threats, but the biggest to CCH was Volke. Why didn't they put a rover/monster on him to follow him to the bathroom?

 

CovCath threw five passes to Connelly in the first series and really didn't go back to him for the rest of the first half. The hitch was there for him all night. Mr. Bir was having some growing pains last night and the 8-10 yd hitch is an easy pass. No timing, quick, one read. It might have helped him with his confidence.

 

Okay, I really have three questions.

 

What gives with the time outs? CovCath has got to manage timeouts better. Against Campbell County in the first half, defense took two time outs and special teams took one. Last night special teams took another for not having enough players on the field. They will pay for that one day!

 

I agree Old Guy, with the exception of two coverage lapses (fake punt, and Volke (gee, there's a shock) taking a return a long way) the kicking game is a weapon. Mr. Talkers and Mr. McD have done an excellent job. Coach Huston was a great pick up for CovCath.

 

You have to give B'wood a ton of credit for that game. They were fired up and ready to play and they had a game plan that was workig.

To scout's questions above:

 

1. Vocke - CCH actually did a pretty good job on him. The kid is special and he makes a lot of tacklers miss.

 

2. Connelly - I agree 100% that it seemd like CCH forgot about him for a while. He is a big target with good hands. If I were coaching, he would have had 10+ receptions last night, or at least the opportunity for 10+.

 

3. Time outs - I can't speak to other CCH games, but using a timeout on an extra point is a waste. Especially when you have a kicker with a leg like Talkers. Take the delay of game if you have to. That extra 5 yards is nothing to a kicker like Talkers.

I'm sure the officials are glad you approve.

some thought one of the players who downed the ball was in the endzone. has anyone seen pictures or film of this play?

 

Many probably do not realize that , unlike the NFL, it doesn't matter where the player is when he's touching the ball. In college and high school all that matters is where the ball is. So a player could be touching the end zone but as long as the ball is still in the field of play it's not a touchback.

Will agree with you and VOR about the time outs on the PAT. With Talkers take the 5 yard penalty as those five extra makes no difference.

 

Have to wonder if the hand was bothering Cubby?

 

And again I agree with VOR, CovCath did indeed do a rather good job on an outstanding player in Vocke.

 

Folks CovCath "O" did a great job last night in the second half. Sure they only scored a total of 10 points after halftime but more importantly they kept Beechwood "O" off the field by just grinding the ball on the ground. If you don't make mistakes and can gain 10 yards over the course of the three plays it called winning the game.

 

BTW Bir numbers were almost the same as Colosimo. Both had a INT, Bir threw two less passes than did Colosimo and completed two less passes and Bir threw a total of 15 less yards than did Colosimo.

The difference is that Colosimo matched his entire season output last night.

The Connelly TD catch that tied the game at 21 was the play of the game for me. Beechwood had stoned CCH on 1st and 2nd down. On 3rd down Connelly makes a great catch on the sideline by the goal line pylon, diving and keeping his feet in bounds. That would have been a big decision if he doesn;t make that catch - kick the field goal or go for it on 4th down? What would you do? What do you think Wirth would have done? I would kick the field goal at that point in the game.

 

I agree this was a huge play in the game. I was thrilled to see the Colonels use their go to guy in this situation. Nine times out of 10 he will step up and make the play.

 

I think one other play may have had a bigger impact on the overall game, and that was the fake punt in the 1st half.

 

At the time Covcath was up 7-0, had just held he tigers to an apparent 3 and out. In a very gutsy call Beechwood executes a 4th and 12? fake punt from their own 48. (not positive of the exact location). I felt this was a huge momentum changer. Had the CovCath Defenders made the open field tackles (nice run by the kicker by the way)

I have to think that MO stays with he Colonels, and perhaps they go up 2 scores. I know we wil never know for sure, but my gut tells me that play changed the way the rest of the 1st half was played.

In my opinion, young Mr. Powell (POW) who is a sophomore is looking really good, as is my "PR/CR man in baseball" Mr. Nienaber, as are all the LB's including Mr. Bayer, Mr. Clark, Mr. Coyne-Chailland and Mr Leo Schaefeir,

From a fan's perspective they're OK. Getting better. They run fairly well. Play hard. Grant Guess has been out the entire season but should be back this week or next which will help. DJ Powell has been good and will be very good over the next two seasons. Nienaber does well on the outside.

I said it last week and I'll say it again...I am very disappointed that Beechwood did not win this game. Several people predicted 2-5 TD margin of victory, CC can name the score, but now "a W is a W"...come on, please!

 

I, for one, came away scratching my head because now I wonder 'is BW getting better OR is CC slightly overrated OR was this just such an emotional game that it's hard to take anything concrete away from it OR perhaps all of the above'.

 

Very emotional game with a great crowd and it was fun to be a part of it.

Are all of the above happy with the victory ? YES

 

Is Beechwood a great Football team? NO

 

Are they tough hard nosed kids who fight to the end? YES

 

Is either team where they need to be compared to the respective schools expectations? NO

 

Can and will both teams take positives away from this game to build on, I believe so. I think Beechwood proved to themselves they can throw the ball effectively, and that they aren't that far away from being legitimate contender in 1A. Very gutsy team, that refused to give up.

 

CovCath proved they can win even if their offense isn't having its best day. They also learned how a few stupid penalties can quickly change a 2 score margin into a nail biter. They need to play nearly flawless football to have the type of season they will be satisfied with.
