I'm checking into this. I was told that it can be a personal foul in NCAA. Not sure yet about NFHS but I would guess it can be there as well.

Tim Timmerman came up huge in that last series by Beechwood by rushing the Bwood QB and not giving him time to throw the ball.

How about this? It's obvious the Colonels are not ready for the Birds. That's not news. Let's keep this to this game.

 

BW fans will be on here soon and I'm guessing some are going to question whether the 3rd TD for the Colonels was legit. Some Colonel fans are going to question calls by the officials (I'm not one ) as CCH had 2 drives where they ended up getting zero points after scoring a TD but having it called back.

 

Great points a win is a win. No matter if its against a not so good Beechwood Team. In these type of games they are for braging rights and again CCH has them great win.

... and so is everyone else, including Ryle. I said it in other threads and I will say it again here - Highlands will beat Ryle worse in the next game than the first one. But as Clyde said, let's stick to the thread topic.

 

agree with you!! the birds will beat Ryle by 20 or more again. that young O-line os getting bette and better and the d-line is just fast!!!!!!!

CovCath fights off Beechwood

What started as a rivalry game became even more heated after a third-quarter fumble in Covington Catholic’s 24-21 squeaker win over Beechwood Friday night.

 

The Colonels jarred the ball loose from Beechwood running back Cameron Vocke and both teams piled on to secure the loose ball. That’s when things got rough, CovCath defensive back Alex Cosby said.

 

“There were punches being thrown and people were poking each other in the eye. It started turning personal,” Cosby said.

 

Officials warned both teams to cool it after CovCath recovered the ball on Beechwood’s 17-yard line.

It was a key sequence for two reasons:

 

• One, it was the start of a 4 minute, 26-second drive that ended with Evan Talkers’ game-winning 30-yard field goal.

 

• Two, Cosby said it was extra motivation for a defense that eventually secured a second-half shutout.

 

The Colonels emerged with their first win in a tight showdown, and they did it against a familiar foe on a field located just 2 miles from their own. CovCath’s closest game before Friday was a 33-point defeat of Lexington Catholic on Aug. 28.

As Covington Catholic head coach Dave Wirth tries to build the Colonels back into the power that has won six state titles, he hopes he can point to Friday night’s 24-21 win at Beechwood as a key moment in the program’s resurgence.

 

The Colonels trailed 21-7 midway through the second quarter and 21-14 at halftime, but rather than getting blown out as it had in a 54-point loss to Ryle and a 43-point loss to Cincinnati La Salle, the Colonels rallied to score the game’s final 17 points.

 

“We’re a somewhat young football team. We haven’t been in a lot of situations like this and clawed our way out of it,” Wirth said. “I think for us this is a turning point of sorts, because we were able to claw our way out of the dungeon, so to speak.”

 

What turned the game on Friday was Covington Catholic’s defense.

 

“They (Beechwood) were 75-percent on third downs, six of eight, in the first half and they were one for four in the second,” Wirth said. “I think that was the telltale statistic of the game.”

 

 

The Tigers rolled up 297 yards of offense on the Colonels in the first half, but were limited to 75 second-half yards. The Colonels nearly matched Beechwood’s first-half production, gaining 285 yards, and easily surpassed the Tigers with 182 yards in the second half.

 

 

“At halftime of the other games, there was a different look in our eyes. We gave up in those games,” said senior defensive back Alex Cosby, who finished with an interception, forced fumble and fumble recovery. “This game there was a totally different look. We looked at each other and we believed in each other, we trusted in each other, and we knew we were going to get the job done.”

 

 

Cosby’s interception halted Beechwood’s opening drive of the game, and CovCath countered with a 10-play drive that ended with senior Alex Slabaugh’s eight-yard touchdown run.

I am surprised to hear that a senior would make that statement...................."We gave up in those games." At halftime?

I wasn't going to ask. I figured you would comment on it yourself. And thanks for acknowledging that Beechwood's talent is better than you expected.

 

Congrats to the Colonels. They made the plays and adjustments they needed to win the game. Bir played how a young talented QB plays - up and down but he had some very nice throws tonight. Connelly is as advertised.

 

It was a very good game. The young Tigers get better every week. This was definitely their best all around game all season. Honestly, and I am sure everyone would expect a Beechwood fan to say this but I believe it is true, Beechwood should have won the game. In an evenly matched game, turnovers are usually the difference and that is the story for the Tigers - they lose the turnover battle 4-1 and only lose the game by 3 points. You lose the turnover battle in an evenly matched game and you lose the game 9 out of 10 times. You lose it by 3 turnovers, and you probably should lose by at least 14 points. The fact that they only lost by 3 despite having three more turnovers says a lot about how they played.

 

Coach Rash was impressive tonight. His game plan was great. His defense seemed to know what was coming all night long. Unfortunately, there were a few plays where it was clear Beechwood knew exactly what the play was and CCH still executed and got big gains. Congrats to the CCH players on out executing the Tigers on those plays.

 

I thought CCH made some nice adjustments at half time on defense and that slowed the Tigers down in the third quarter. Then when the Tigers offense adjusted and had a drive going, they turned the ball over at about the 15 on their way to at least a field goal. :madman: That hurt.

 

The Tigers played great and I am excited about the rest of the season. I think these first four games have done exactly what Coach Rash wanted - uncovered all the weaknesses and enabled the Tigers to get ready for another title run. They are there and it is time to roll.

 

Good post. Lets not forget that this is a neighborhood rivalry so the Tigers likely were jacked up hence the great effort.

OK. After further investigation the officials got it right. There is a rule that results in a personal foul if an official thinks a player intentionally hits someone not involved in the play.

Another huge play was the punt of Mitch McDowell and the downing of the ball at around the 1 yard line.

That punt was sky high, deep and after the ball hit the ground went straight back up in the air allowing a CovCath defender to keep it in play.

 

The kickers McDowell and Talkers, remind me of Popham and Bleser from the 2006 squad, not as good yet, but as both young men are Juniors they have time to get to that level!
