I said it last week and I'll say it again...I am very disappointed that Beechwood did not win this game. Several people predicted 2-5 TD margin of victory, CC can name the score, but now "a W is a W"...come on, please!

 

I, for one, came away scratching my head because now I wonder 'is BW getting better OR is CC slightly overrated OR was this just such an emotional game that it's hard to take anything concrete away from it OR perhaps all of the above'.

 

Very emotional game with a great crowd and it was fun to be a part of it.

 

Remember two TD's were called back. So I'm not sure how that plays into your post with two more possible CCH touchdowns on the board. From my prespective the Beechwood team came to play. They were fired up. The spirit in the stadium was great. I haven't seen much excitement on field from the Colonels in the moments before the games start. I certainly did not see that spark Friday night. The Beechwood atmosphere was cool. The parents were very nice and accomodating and the kids seemed well-behaved from where i was.

 

I will go back to the LexCath game. The CCH players seemed fired up. Pumped up and truly excited to get that game started. and remember that was a game took forever to begin and ended at 1am!

They also learned how a few stupid penalties can quickly change a 2 score margin into a nail biter.

 

Agree on all points...plus, from a BW perspective, the BW player's quickly learned how turnover's can turn a game around from a potential "nail in the coffin" to "leaving the door open" for a good team to take advantage of. All in all, the atmosphere was the definition of "friday night lights".

IMO the pre-game level of excitement usually has an impact for about 4 plays. Some kids just don't show it outwardly. Some will look like they're ready to run through a wall and then not know where they're supposed to line up. The truth comes out when the game starts. I saw a lot of flying to the ball and lot of strong pops. The effort for both teams was certainly evident Friday night.

 

CCH's problems IMO came from missed assignments and not their pre-game attitude.

Mom CovCath had three TD's called back! One in the first half and two on the same drive (btw I am not saying that flags were not justified at all, they were) in the fourth quarter.

 

You do realize don't you Mom, that the LexCath game started two and a half hours later than the posted game time! The kids were bitting at the bite and couldn't wait to get out onto the field and the coaches knew they had to get the kids super pumped because of waiting so long for the game to begin.

 

From where I was at prior to the start of the Beechwood game the players seemed to me to be up for the game and I think it showed by scoring first, but after the fake punt you could see the let down and that is why I was so pleased with the win as these young men came back on the road in front of a hostile crowd with their band playing and even after being down 14, still won the game.

My memory is a little fuzzy already. I know on the end of the game drive where two where called back that CCH did not score. But I was thinking on the TD called back earlier in the game due to the block behind the play that CCH ended up scoring on that drive anyway. Refresh my memory on the outcome of that drive please.

They didn't score on that drive as far as I remember. They only had 7 at half, right? They scored on their first drive and that penalty was in the first half so I'm pretty sure I'm right.

TOG checked it out and said CCH did not score on that drive. I still can't recall how that drive ended but I looked at TOG's scoring summary earlier in the thread and the two first half TD's were the first drive and the 80 yard run. So CCH did lose two scoring drive TD's because of penalties.

Looking back (okay, way back) I can't recall ever hearing any one's student section (including Highlands'), a hostile crowd, a band or any thing other than my coaches on the sidelines during a game (well there was the game against Dixie my senior year when me and another player tackled a Dixie runner on the visitors side on about the 10 yd line when two certain former Highlands players picked up me and the other Highlands player and in no uncertain terms told the two of us that if Dixie scored, they whip our rear ends....and let there be no doubt, they could have. Fortunately for the both of us, the other Highlands player picked the option pitch out of the air and returned it to about to Dixie's 5 yd line on the next play). But other than that one incident and listening to what my coaches were shouting from the sidelines, I was so focused on the game and doing my assignments, that hostile crowds and bands were irrelevant. Oh stop. First the whining about the Ru's thread and now this. It's beneath you. You got a "CovCath guy" as your coach and he seems to be every thing that you said you wanted in a coach, as those things were more important than winning or losing. So don't complain about the Ru starting a post about whether CovCath will win another game the rest of the year other than against Scott. That shouldn't matter to someone not all that interested in whether a coach wins or loses. My comments about the hostile crowd and band not having an effect on the CovCath players or the outcome of a game shouldn't matter to someone not all that interested in whether a coach wins or loses.

 

By the way, I never used the word fearful once in my post. I ditto'd someone else's comments and what I ditto'd was the part about not noticing the hostile crowds and band (which should have been obvious to a smart old guy like you since I then directed my post to the point about players not even hearing all that stuff). You are the one that thought the hostile crowd and band were big enough items to merit mention in your post. Family Tradition and I were only pointing out that from our perspective, they were irrelevent.

 

I apologize for intruding my Dixie story into the CovCath Beechwood thread, but it was somewhat (I said somewhat) germane to your comment about CovCath having to overcome a hostile crowd and their band; things that I doubt very, very few focused players even notice during a game. Since you are admittedly not a football person, I thought I'd share some football memories of mine for you.

Nice work Clyde. People have to remember that there are different rules for Friday, Saturday and Sunday games................

 

 

Agreed (that's twice during the month of September we've agreed. :thumb:). It is very difficult for people to remember that the rules are different for the different levels. They listen to the TV commentators for college and Pro games discuss penalties and then think that what they heard explained is applicable to high school sports, which it sometimes is but not always. The one that gets me the most is when someone yells after a defensive interference call: that was an uncatchable ball!
