No, he's really not. He puts far too many people on base and constantly pitches from behind. I'll rather see any of the three you mentioned in the 9th before Cordero. He's not the best choice for the job just because he's been doing it all season. Generally speaking he's done a pretty poor job all season long and still only has the role because Dusty is an idiot.

Good Lord dmd, we were here. You were in those threads. Nothing has just popped up, no one I know of posted that they were comfortable that CoCo was in. No one.

Just going to throw this out there, as it seems like nobody has any other "obvious" alternatives to Coco as the closer...what do you think the chances are that we'll see Harang out at the end of game in the not too distant future? He's a veteran (so you know Dusty's gonna like him), and him being entrusted with closing a game out (versus mop up duty) might be a way for him to "save face" with the demotion to the bullpen. Add to the fact that he'd likely only be pitching an inning at most, means that he won't be facing anybody in the lineup a second or third time in a night the way he would be in the rotation.

I would hope as the injured outfielders begin to get healthy (Bruce, Nix and Edmonds) that things will begin to pick up. I think it would also be nice to be able to give Phillips a break every now and then too, to get him recharged...but with the outfield already thin, I think Dusty's been hesitant to do that at the same time.

Closers, especially those for playoffs teams, don't generally have an ERA of 4.04 and an a WHIP of 1.50. He had a nice stretch recently. Great. One would hope so out of a $12M closer. Prior to that he had a long stretch of troubled outings. There's just no way to feel safe when he's on the mound. If that's they guy Dusty is going to ride out (and it is), so be it and I'll root like heck for him, but I honestly think he's going to be a major reason why the Reds get eliminated in the playoffs.

Got to ride Coco. I know he can make for eventful 9th innings, but in regards to saves in save opportunities, he is right near the top in converting those chances.

He is best suited for it of all in the pen. Massett may very well be in a year or so, once Coco is gone...or maybe AChap, but right here, right now its Coco.

I think the ERA stat is not a a good measure for a closer due to the very low number of innings they pitch. I prefer to look at how many times he did well.

I don't know that 64 innings is a piddling sample size. But even if you don't like using ERA, WHIP is a fair gauge to use. And his isn't very impressive. It ultimately doesn't matter - he's the Reds closer and I hope he finishes on a tear. But he inspires exactly zero confidence when he's out there and darn sure isn't worth the $12+ M we are paying him.

Seems like the Reds will make the playoffs, but they'll limp their way in--both figuratively and literally speaking.
