Lexington Catholic knew before taking the field Saturday that it would be in for a long night in the 15th annual Republic Bank Bluegrass Bowl.

 

The opener, scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m., was delayed about 50 minutes because of a 107-degree on-field heat index when the teams were scheduled to begin warm-ups.

 

The game also was delayed more than 15 minutes in the second quarter when North Hardin's Darren Woods suffered an apparent broken left leg.

 

After Collins held off North Hardin 49-42, Covington Catholic made the home team's night seem longer still, blasting the Knights 54-21. The game ended a few minutes before 1 a.m.

Lexington Catholic lost its bowl game for only the second time in 15 years.

 

Covington Catholic 54, Lexington Catholic 21: The Colonels outgained LexCath 579 yards to 382. Things might have been worse if not for 113 yards in penalties.

Well I thought that this game would have been the other way around. I guess that is what I get for thinking congrats to Cov Cath.

Offense looked more in sync, which allowed the defense to get a rest. Special teams gave Cov Cath great field position all night. Except for the penalties this was a very good game for Cov Cath. As I stated after the Ryle game, they are moving in the right direction and you will continue to see improvement. In all areas of their game.

Alex Connelly ties team record with 3 TD catches. Just to put the 343 yards passing in prospective. Now realize that Gabe Gray had a 41 yard TD pass on the half back option, but the team record for passing in a game by one person is 354 by Josh Bleser. Bir was 16-20 for 302. I don't want to hear that it was a lot of screens. Who cares. He made the throws and ran the offense.

Nice win for the Blueboys on the road. For anyone that was suprised with this win then they dont know CovCath. That program has alot of talent and pride over there and they deserve respect. CovCath should not be taken lightly this yr despite their 1st game hiccup. Go Birds 20n10

I was surprised by the win, but after looking at some tape of Covington Catholic after the Ryle game I knew the score of that game was not truly indicative of the type of team Covington Catholic had. Ball pursuit was not very good, but that appears to be something they've worked on within the last week. How did the QB from LC play? He is considered a top prospect.
