Thomas Merton (Good Catholic) says that the pursuit of God is in itself pleasing to God. How do we know they are all not pursuing the same God.

I just finished reading the The Seven Storey Mountain. Merton (a monk) believed there was value in learning from all religions. In fact, he and the Dalai Lama were buddies.

Jesus said the way to the father was through him. Do Jews and Muslims believe that? If they don't then you're statement is not right, other than the father is the same.

It depends on what "through" him means. Matthew 25 talks about getting to heaven, and it is Jesus speaking, but it mentions nothing about what you have to believe. It might be that because of Jesus obedience even unto death, that the gap separating Man and God has been closed, and we just have to find out own path.

 

Many Jews do believe that Christians are going to heaven through Christ. That is not their route, but they don't deny my route.

I have to say I agree, this is where the paths are definitely not the same.

Right, but Judism and Islam both believe there is a different path that leads to the Father....So how do we know that Jesus is the only way? Couldn't they have it right, and we have it wrong?

You know, this might take this conversation totally off topic, but whatever lol. I have always wondered how this would all work because if I was born in a predominately Buddhist, Hindu, (insert any religion here) I probably would have grown up an accepted that to be true. So, what happens to people like that when they pass? According to Christian belief they would take the elevator down because they don't believe in Jesus Christ, but that doesn't seem right to me.

That's a tough question, and one I definitely think about a lot. Why do we think whatever our religion is, is the right one? If it's one you've chosen on your own accord, that may be different, but if you've been raised a certain way (Catholic for me), that's all you've ever known. IMO, you have to gain an understanding of all faiths to not only make an informed decision, but also to be truly a member of your chosen faith.

What says any of them are right? What if there is no elevator up or down. Can you tell me one other example where millions of people base their lives on a book that was written 1500 or so years ago by people you know nothing about. Yet millions and millions of people take their word that it's all true. But if your best friend tells you God speaks to him you would will most likely think his cheese slide off his cracker.

That's a tough question, and one I definitely think about a lot. Why do we think whatever our religion is, is the right one? The way I look at it, God's house has many paths leading up to it. As long as you love God, yourself, and your neighbor -- you do your best to follow what you believe to be his will -- you won't stray from the path.
