Mercer Co. got the win and deservingly advances. I'm just not buying the "big adjustments" that caused Mercer Co. to win...because had the Cougars not shot themselves in the taill by their own mistakes, I don't feel Mercer Co. wins the game. The momentum shift to Mercer Co. after the kickoff return with 4.2 remaining in the half was the difference. After the Cougars scored to go up 21-6, Mercer Co. was visibly distraught and you could hear and see a lot of frustration. However, the Cougars even with a 21-14 halftime lead seemed "down" and you could feel a transition in momentum.

 

Both teams turned the ball over twice. So it's real hard to say Morgan shot themselves in the tail when the give away take away was even. Mercer was never distraught, and I don't know what frustration you heard. Morgan was busy celebrating while Mercer knows it's a 48 minute ball game and Morgan was already tired. Six of their players already hand their hands on their knees sucking for air. Mercer looks for that and they feed off of it. Mercer physically abused Morgan, that is what they do. If you watched the game Mercer went to an eight man front for quicker penatration to force the pitch earlier. Fatigue and a change in the D caused those errant pitches.

All that is nice for you guys to have to throw out there and to talk about, but it'll mean nothing to Mercer @ 7:31 pm on Friday evening. Again, Russell is not a powerhouse just ask Boyd County. Hey, we all know the Devils are a real good team and, truthfully, Mercer with it's weak schedule is certainly unproven. However, I just gotta hunch this'll be a dandy ballgame. Teams that are as hungry as Mercer and that play the type of offense that Jaggers plays along with its solid defense are difficult to score alot of points against and are, therefore, sometimes tough outs in the playoffs. Mercer better bring there A+ game because the Devils are mighty tough to beat at home.

Mercer will bring their A game. They always do. This is a true team oriented team. Jaggers have made them believe in themselves. I think it will be close but Mercer will come out on top.

I don't know how Garrard County got in the discussion. Mercer County had not won a playoff game in about 20 years until last week. They are being led by a new head coach this year with a proven winning track record. Coach Jaggers took Lincoln County to the AAA Finals in 1993 and is an innovative football strategist who learned a lot from his legendary father, Joe Jaggers, and even more from Danville coach Sam Harp, with whom Marty coached from 1997-2004.

 

Marty makes it look easy by lining up in the wishbone (and breaking the bone) but it takes great coaching to execute at the point of attack when the other team knows what's coming. He is good at featuring a back, like he did with Jeremy Simpson at Lincoln County who was the 1993 Mr. Football and who rushed for over 3,000 yards that season. The talent at Mercer County is perfect for Marty's offensive style.

 

I can't tell you who will win because they still play the game with an odd shaped ball that is know to take strange bounces, but Mercer County will be ready to play and will be well coached.

Look for Mercer to do what they do best. Pound, pound, pound on O and D. Russell is a very good team, but Mercer will test every ounce of strenth they have. A fourth quarter touchdown gives Mercer a 28-21 victory and sets up a rematch between Mercer and Newport.

BS! Marty Jaggers has not won a state title. Does that mean that he does not know football? Even more to the point, if I lived in Russell or was a Russell fan, would my opinion be more worthy than it is as a Garrard fan? Lastly, winning a regional title makes a team a "powerhouse" ?? Powerhouses play in Louisville for state championships, year in and year out. Russell has never played in a title game (this might be their year).

I look for a close game, Mercer pulls it out in the end, and plays at home next week.
