Russell vs Mercer County Predictions

Featured Replies

So wonderfully spoken Francis, as always. ;)
Why, thank you, Nets. So very kind, indeed.

It's a shame you're not going to be able to attend the game. Tell all the ladies in Mayberry hello!! haha. Best of Luck to your Red Devils. :thumb:

I'll certainly tell everyone at the Ladies' Auxiliary that you said "Hello". Of course, Maybelle Deskins has always had her eye on you, and she might get a little "carried away" with what that really means...

As to that "Best of luck to your Red Devils", I'd say that FBALL will toss his cookies when he reads that line.

In all honesty, at this point in the playoffs, most of the weak sisters have been culled from the field. We'll have one or two big margins this week, but they'll get fewer and farther between, now. I'm sure that both of these teams will speak well of themselves on Friday night. :thumb:

Actually, it sounds pretty good to me. Maybe we can convert you.

Nah... The Tomcat blood runs to deep.

Frances,

I dont think they have better athletes than Newport(I sure hope not), even at that, Mercer gave Newport all that they wanted, but athletes and football players are really two different things.

I'm not trying to talk trash. But I believe that Russell will be the most athletic team that Mercer has faced all year.

Well, I've already got plenty of maroon in the closet - so that's a plus ...

I can root for the Devils 51 weeks a year - so I've got that going for me ...

I've been seen in public with people like the Duckster and Devil58 - so it isn't all good ...

If the Devils get to Papa John's (and I don't think it's that much of a long shot), I'll definitely be wearing my maroon on Friday!!!

Actually the Class AA Championship is at 3:30 pm on Saturday December 3rd and the AAA is at 11:30 am and A at 7:30 pm, While AAAA is the only game on friday this year and its at 7:30 pm December 2nd. Throw ur maroon on This friday hopefully you will give the Devils luck. Always nice to have Aunt B rooting for the Devils. :D

Well having watched both teams I must go with nets.I also watched the same game He watches at Mercer. I am sure there was some adjusting but, Morgan also shot themselves in the foot. Like Nets this is not to take anything frm Mercer. When playing an excellent opponent you can't let up. That kick with 4 secs in the first half was supposed to be a squib but the kicker did not understand that. But, all things said we lost.

Russell is without a doubt one of the best places to play. We went there 2 times last year, same result both times, but the atmosphere is great. The Russell fans are great. When they came to our "stadium" this year it was the same great feeling between fans.

I will say that if Mercer is to win, they will have to play a much better game than they did us. this being said:

Russell 42

Mercer 21

Go all the way Russell

Why do you think Morgan shot themselves in the foot? Because the pressure that was placed on them by Mercer. That's what a good team does. I agree that Russell will be tough but I often heard that teams like Mercer get over looked and then that's when you see them take advantage of the situation. Look for it to be a tough physical game. I still think this team believes that they can do something great and they will.

You have to "slum it" sometimes...Part of the community service the auxillary does...

Devil58 -

We had the "Drawing of the Straws" last night at the Auxiliary. I drew first, and got the short one again, so it looks like I'll be your liaison on championship weekend.

I've planned a day trip to Jucy's Barbecue, and Friday evening in front of the prison at LaGrange. They have a nice show on Fridays, as the prisoners come out to mow the lawns and trim the hedges for the final time before the heavy winter sets in.

Socially yours,

Frances

A good time will be had by all.

Maybe Mercer can help Russell shoot themselves in the foot, like Morgan Co. shot themselves in the foot. 41 points in 24:04, and Cougardad says Mercer needs to play better!

Better get the Kool-aid out, if Mercer beats Russell. :D

Frances,

I agree. Mercer doesnt need to get behind on Russell like they did on Morgan, even if they do, Mercer cab still pull off a win. They wont panic, they have been down several times this year early in the game. North Laurel jumped out to a lead, so did Newport, Morgan and Garrard County. All of these teams were up at least one touchdown, maybe 2 at halftime. In saying that, i will agree that this Russell team will be the best that Mercer has played. I dont think they have better athletes than Newport(I sure hope not), even at that, Mercer gave Newport all that they wanted, but athletes and football players are really two different things.

Better get your facts straight on the Garrard-Mercer game. While your story sounds good, you obviously don't have a clue as to how that contest unfolded.

Garrardgnat,

What do you mean, getting my facts straight on how it unfolded? Mercer was down in the game, and came back to win. Thats the only point Im trying to make. From what I remember, Mercer was down at halftime, or if not halftime, they were down for most of the 1st half.

This is what the Danville Advocate-Messenger has to say about the game :thumb:

Mercer will test Russell

By MARTY WARREN

[email protected]

HARRODSBURG - Now that Mercer County has made it through the first round of the playoffs for the first time since 1988, the Scotties will travel to northeastern Kentucky to face Russell, a team that has dominated the Class AA, Region 3 playoffs for several years.

"Coach (Ivan) McGlone has been at Russell for about 30 years and has over 200 victories," Mercer coach Marty Jaggers said. "They have had a solid program for a long time and have a long winning streak on their home field. However, our kids believe we have a chance at winning."

Junior Kasey Clark rushed for over 1,000 yards as a sophomore and leads the Red Devils, who returned only three players on offense from last year. Clark has rushed for 993 yards and 20 touchdowns this season and has contributed in every way possible. He also has three touchdowns as a receiver, has returned interceptions and fumbles for scores, and has tallied twice on special teams.

"They are a physical team and similar to us in a lot of ways," Jaggers said. "They will run out of a Wing-T set and they will line up and just knock people off the ball. It will probably be a long bus ride up there, but it could easily be a very short game. Both teams like to run the football and take time off of the clock."

Russell returns seven starters on the defensive side of the ball from last year.

"They have tons of experience and their linebackers are as good as anyone we have seen all year," the Mercer coach said. "They are fundamentally sound. They won't make many mistakes. When they do, we will need to capitalize."

Linebacker Derek Timberlake anchors the defense that also has a pair of big tackles in Tim Smith and Cameron Perry. Clark, Michael Horn (6-1,175) and Jacob Sizemore (6-2, 180) make up the secondary.

10th win ties school record

Mercer (10-1) tied a school record with its 10th win - the 1988 playoff team finished 10-2 - last week when it beat Morgan County to advance to the second round. The Scotties trailed at one point 21-6 in the first half, but dominated the second half offensively and shut down the Cougars completely in the second half.

Donald Walker, who leads the Scotties in rushing with 1,330 yards and 23 scores, returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns and scored five times during Mercer's come-from-behind win last week.

"He's really hard to tackle and proved that last week against Morgan," Jaggers said. "But he not only had a good game offensively, but he was solid on defense, too. Nathan (Griffith) had a nice second half and our offensive linemen just dominated the game after halftime."

"I didn't think (Morgan) could stop us from scoring last week. My only doubt was whether we could stop them. Russell will be a lot more physical than Morgan was. It will be a war. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will probably win the game."

Jaggers said the playoff win helped his team's morale and created a great atmosphere.

"There were a lot of happy kids and happy adults," Jaggers said. The thing that was so neat was the fans stayed in the stands after the game. You would have thought we had won the state championship.

"I talked with the kids for a while after the game and then they went over and thanked (the fans) for sticking around. It's been a long time since they won a playoff game, and hopefully we'll extend our season a little longer this week."
