July 29, 201016 yr Dusty made a great call by pulling Wood out of the game today. With an off day on Thursday, the bullpen needed some work. As the Cowboy said, and Clyde repeated, and I'm repeating now, "You'll rust 'em out before you wear 'em out." I'm a bit concerned about Leake's & Wood's innings pitched. Wood can go a little further than Leake, but I'd limit Wood to the low 200's. He pitched a career high 167 innings last year and has already thrown about 130 innings this year, so I'd guess he has about 70 to go. The Reds have 60 games left. At this point, Wood should be staying in the rotation & should make about 10 - 12 more starts. If he continues to throw like this, he'll break the 200 inning mark before the postseason, if the Reds are able to make it. So pulling him out today, with a solid lead, was the right call. Dusty catches a lot of grief from a lot of people and, at times, myself. But he absolutely made the right call on this one. The public has made Dusty responsible for ruining Kerry Wood & Mark Prior. He deserves some credit for making the right call here.
July 29, 201016 yr I wouldn't think Nix would have options. So what? He would have to clear waivers to be sent down, but who is going to stake a claim for him?

Dusty did have a hand in ruining Wood and Prior, in my opinion and that of a lot of others that saw it happen. I've said this year that Dusty has done a good job with Leake ... I still suspect it's Jocketty laying down the law on that one.

A lot can go wrong, and quite frankly a lot has to go right for a pitcher to last in the MLB. My point is that Dusty & Walt Jocketty have done everything right (in my opinion, of course) in handling the young guys. Their only mistake is letting Cueto / Volquez throw Winter Ball and/or in the WBC.
July 29, 201016 yr Author So what? He would have to clear waivers to be sent down, but who is going to stake a claim for him? I can't see Nix accepting a minor leauge assignment.

There has to be a bench guy that needs swings more than Leake. It worked out, but I still don't understand the move.
July 29, 201016 yr Seems like it's been a while since the Reds have put together really good back to back offensive performances. Doesn't bode well for Wood.......again. God knows they can't put three good offensive outings together.... I guess we'll see tomorrow.
July 29, 201016 yr Who is ready for some New York Metropolitans baseball! Reds really could use the help today... Yeah, game doesn't start for a couple hours, but I'm bored and got nothing else to do right now.
July 29, 201016 yr I wonder if they'd expand to a six man when Bailey comes back? This would give Wood, Leake, AND Bailey an extra day off. Not sure how you would pull that off because Arroyo, Cueto, and Volquez need to stay on schedule.
July 29, 201016 yr Cincy is skipping Leake since today is an off day. The rotation looks like this: Cueto Arroyo Volquez Wood Leake
July 29, 201016 yr Mets put the 1st two men on to start the 2nd inning... ...and proceed to do nothing with it, scoreless after 2. thanks to Keith Hernandez, I now have "royale with cheese" in my head
