July 25, 201016 yr I say most definetly yes the way it looks. Millions will be getting unemployment checks for 3-4 years, are you kidding me? No one is looking for work(unless it pays twice as much as their unemployment check), no one is moving to another state, county, etc. to find work that exisits(unless it pays twice as much as their unemployment check), no one is using their unemployment time to learn a new skill or trade, go back to school, just bellyaching. Can't Democrats and some Republicans get this through their heads. Unemployment checks are the new welfare, millions will be on them for a life time unless someone has the balls to pull the plug. Sad.
July 25, 201016 yr While I think it could be a good motivator if unemployment checks were stopped, do you realize just how many people would be put out on the streets with an act like this? You could very well see the number of homeless double or even triple overnight. There has to be a better solution, unfortunately I don't have another offer.
July 25, 201016 yr Saw at the gym tonight unemployment is projected to be 8% in 2012. Not looking good.

Motivator for what - have you guys not paid attentionn at all at any point. THERE ARE 5 APPLICANTS FOR EVERY JOB OUT THERE. So, when every job is filled only 20% of those unemployed right now would have jobs. You can't just go to work. And, I don't think you guys understand how unemployment works . . . it is not never ending. your benefits do run out.
July 25, 201016 yr If you promise to keep paying people, and they don't have to work, whom do you think they will vote for???
July 25, 201016 yr If you promise to keep paying people, and they don't have to work, whom do you think they will vote for??? Where are they going to work. The are 5 applicants for every job, where do you want them to work?

And, I don't think you guys understand how unemployment works . . . it is not never ending. your benefits do run out. 5 or 20 applicants(whatever) for every job out there is a made up figure by the unemployed and Obama's camp. Does it include Subway, service jobs housing tobacco and other jobs I see no Americans working at because they don't have too or want too, there is no sense of urgency. At least take the time to learn a trade(plumber, electrical, etc.) or go back to college to get another career, beggars can't be choosers. But as long as these never ending checks keep coming, that will never ever happen. Do you honestly think benefits will be voted down the next time around Thanksgiving? They will never run out until Obama's term is over, that will be 4 years of benefits for 10's of millions by that time. People that are working want their check too,at least make it fair Mr. President. Give the working people stimulus checks for a certain amount every week just like the unemployed and for just as long.

I would almost guarantee it was at least that ratio when unemployment was 6%.
July 25, 201016 yr I love these threads. (Not) I wonder if sometimes some of you have no grasp of the reality for many workers who are unemployed right now. Regarding the notion: "Pick up and go to a state that is hiring." - how do you do that exactly? Is it as easy as that statement makes it? Real Story: My neighbor is 50 years old. He worked for 25 years at Ridgeway Clocks and worked his way "up that manufacturing ladder" on the floor. After a couple of buyouts the plant was shut down about a year ago. He has a house and a wife working in the school system. He is going back to school trying to earn a degree that will get him a job. Tell me how does he sell a house in this market? What value will he get back in selling the house in a place that has 15 to 20 % unemployment? Do you throw away your investment on the HOPE of a job somewhere else? ( I won't even go into the outlying factors of aging parents who are in failing health and his feeling of responsibility to care for them) I don't think UE is the solution by any means. However the notions sometimes offered here are lacking in in any real concept of the pressures and circumstances of people. They are also lacking in compassion for these kinds of individuals I've described.

Maybe real compassion would be shown by folks families like it was long ago in our country. The "compassion" which simply equals money from the governmnent is not appreciated, and is now expected by those down on their luck. We have all had this discussion in many diferent threads, but if you are not willing to move when your family is hungry, then what do you expect us to do. If the floods come and you won't leave-sorry that is your fault if you are washed away. Also, in our country, unlike some nations in Africa, I don't see many dying in the US of starvation. As a matter of fact, the opposite seems true. Larger humans are in stores buying items that are not healthy with money supplied from the government. Imo, if you are on the government take, then they should be able to tell you what jobs you will apply for and what jobs you will take. At the point of receiving money, they are your boss, and if you don't do what they tell you, they cut off the money flow. Simple as that. There are hard luck stories everywhere. When the rich get smacked down for whatever reason usually there is applause from the masses, but the end of the story is usually those folks are resourceful enough to figure anything out and make it work.

Have you ever had to be on Unemployment ?
July 25, 201016 yr Have you ever had to be on Unemployment ? Nope-could have a couple of times, but was able to find work quickly.
July 25, 201016 yr Nope-could have a couple of times, but was able to find work quickly. You were very fortunate my friend .
July 25, 201016 yr You were very fortunate my friend . Fortunate or resourceful? Look, benefits must have limits. As a FREE country we cannot continue supplying money to every single person that does not have or will not get a job. Just as there are many people really wanting a job, there are plenty that would give their job up to be on the dole. Where does it end? It won't take long before we're taxed so much the "dole" will start looking better to all of us. The "dole" should be reformed to vouchers for utilities, food and basic needs instead of cash payments. I'm not referring to unemployment (for a reasonable time) as the dole. Again, extending benefits in times such as these is not a bad idea as long as we are not going deeper in debt. If the Obama admin and congress were genuinely concerned with getting people back to work they would take a serious look at replacing our current tax system with some kind of sales tax, severely cut corporation taxes, reduce regulations on business, allow companies to return from overseas without taxing or penalizing them, encourage big business instead of making them out to be evil, etc. I understand that some of you can't stand the fact that a lot of people will get filthy stinking rich under those conditions, but keep in mind, those stinking people will be hiring your loved ones that will be homeless due to unemployment benefits not being extended.
July 25, 201016 yr I thought it was small businesses that drove the job market. 99 weeks - that is the limit. As much as you want to say it, we are not TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY. And your second paragraph is EXACTLY what we did under Bush. Why do you think we would get a different outcome than what we got.
