Covington Catholic's Dan Tieman

Featured Replies

Coach Tieman is retiring from teaching at the end of the year, after teaching and coaching at Cov Cath for 46 years. Here's an article that was sent out in one of the various alumni emails this morning.

Thanks for the years of love and dedication coach.

Taking care of business every way"

"Mr. Holland isn't rich and he isn't famous. He's achieved a success far beyond riches and fame. There is not a life in this room that you have not touched. We are your symphony, Mr. Holland. We are the melodies and the notes of your opus. We are the music of your life."

The first week of May was Teacher Appreciation Week. One that I was glad to have was Dan Tieman.

Tieman was once an NBA point guard. He played a season with the Cincinnati Royals (now the Sacramento Kings) and was a legend in the rough neighborhood where both he and my parents grew up, in Covington, Kentucky.

To have a neighborhood guy wind up in the National Basketball Association was an awe- inspiring achievement.

I knew about Dan Tieman (and his brother, Roger) long before Dan became my teacher at Covington Catholic High School.

I heard about Mr. Tieman, but not from Mr. Tieman.

Mr. Tieman never talked about his NBA career. I heard him reference it one time in the context of a story about someone else. Otherwise, it never came up.

Covington Catholic was (and is) a sports powerhouse.. Many of my teachers had big athletic resumes. The basketball coach, Dick Maile, was an All-American at Louisiana State University (LSU) and he rarely talked about that, either.

The lesson learned was that the higher your achievement, the less inclined you are to brag about it.

Dan Tieman is a guy who let his deeds, not his words, do the talking. When he took over as the head coach of Covington Catholic's basketball team, he won over 300 games, more than any other coach of that prestigious program.

The school was blessed with a number of outstanding people, like Dan Tieman, who devoted their lifetimes to teaching and stayed at the school long enough to impact at least a couple of generations.

I am thankful I was one of them.

Covington Catholic is holding a retirement party for Mr. Tieman in the school gymnasium on Sunday, May 16th. 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. They have also established the Dan Tieman Scholarship. To donate, you can send a check to: Covington Catholic High School, 1600 Dixie Hwy, Park Hills, KY 41011

Don't know him personally, I have had a few interactions with him in the past. But I think most people that have had the chance to get to know him would label him a class act. Nice to see him get some recognition for his hard work. Like the article stated, there are stories about great teachers in every school. I think we can all related to these people in way. I hope Mr. Tieman enjoy's retirement.

Good coach. Great man. I always enjoyed him and he sure loved CCH-never a question about that!

The Coach Tieman article was written by syndicated columnist, author, financial guru (and Cov. Cath. grad) Don McNay. The column will start hitting the newspapers over the weekend and will be all over the country next week.

Good to hear that Coach T will still be coaching next year!

Kudos to Mr. Tieman, being young, I can't even fathom 46 years of employment. Luckily for the young men of CCH, he will only be leaving the classroom. I'm sure he will be missed in the classroom but it's good to see he will continue to coach young men on the court. You won't find too many coaches with 300 victories willing to sit on the bench as an assistant but it seems like he's not driven by a huge ego.

Mr. Tieman (and to this day I call him Mr. Tieman) first year of teaching at CovCath was my Freshmen year. He helped me get through a rather tough time in my life when my Father died in my freshmen year and he always seem to be there to either kick me in the butt, or to pat me on the back. Thanks Mr. Tieman!

Knows more about basketball than anyone in that building. He was definitely my favorite coach through my basketball episode there. Never had Coach T as a teacher but I've heard some good stories. He will surely be missed in the halls at CCH.

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, will kinglouie come not to bury Coach Tieman but to praise him? The king has not weighed in on the topic as of yet. Strap down your monitor. A kind word about a Cov. Cath. coach from kinglouie might send reverberations throughout the entire BGP system. :D

I had always known of Coach Tieman by as a player and a coach, but never knew the person until I became a member at Turners years ago. The first thing I saw was what a tremendous person he is. He treats people with respect and defintely gets it in return. As far as his basketball side, he loves the game so much and is so dedicated to it and CovCath. His knowledge for the game is superior to most fans and coaches. He is truly a role model not just for the young men who are associated with CovCath, but everyone who he comes in contact with.

Sorry I have been away for a bit, and just now learned that there are many awaiting my words on coach T.......... Well. I am not sure what to say.... :D

Well, I have always, and to this day continue to think highly of Coach T. He is a greater teacher of the game, still relates to the guys, and IMO is a better man off the court! Congrats Coach!

Coach, you are a wonderful role model for people of all ages. Your dedication and your history at CCH is unmatched. Thank you for 46 years of service to the young men of Northern Kentucky.

As a young kid I used to keep score for the weekly mens league at Turners. Afterwards when I would clean up Dan would be shooting baskets all alone and just nail jump shots from everywhere. I would rebound for him. I thought he could not miss. And they all were swishes too. He used to show me a trick that when the basketball nets were brand new and real tight and that if you make a perfect swish it would snap the ball back out through the rim. And he did it over and over. I will always remember that. It was like magic to a kid.

If anyone knows please correct me, but I was told he had a nickname when he was with the royals. He played behind Oscar Robertson. So when Oscar took a break Dan would sub for him. The nickname was something like the "3 minute man", b/c thats all the Big O needed for a break.

What a great person.
