May 5, 201016 yr Some ladies in Maine decided to march topless through the town square to point out the double standard around the issue of going shirtless. The law allows for it so it wasn't designed to change the law. They said that they wanted to point out the double standard and to help prevent women's breasts from being sexually objectified. So, I'm sure many of us are against it or we're uncomfortable with it. However, how do we rationalize the double standard?
May 5, 201016 yr For some reason, I immediately thought of this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dDloNrIubU I need help.
May 5, 201016 yr Does anyone have any pictures???????????????? You know to study and try and see the point of view they are coming from.
May 5, 201016 yr Obama would love it... Make us even more European... Someone mentions topless women and you think Obama?
May 5, 201016 yr Ft. Wright, KY has an ordinance outlawing men from going shirtless. It's probably been in place for 12 or 13 years now.
May 5, 201016 yr Ok, I found this story, and pictures, in the Bangor Daily News, and if that isn't ironic I don't know what is. Now aren't you sorry you asked for pictures?
May 5, 201016 yr double standard? points of view:D Bangor Daily I'm sensing a disturbing pattern here...
May 5, 201016 yr Author OK. We've all got the initial funny reactions out of the way. I applaud some of your efforts. However, does anyone want to deal with the double standard issue?
May 5, 201016 yr I suppose it would all come back to who and what defines decency. Obviously there is a breast taboo that has been instituted somewhere along the line, and public decency codes were based upon those taboos. Women have been covering themselves and not covering themselves for most all of modern (and ancient) time. The women of ancient Egypt covered their chests, the women of ancient Crete did not. Most women of modern-day North American culture generally cover their chests, while those of may modern-day South American cultures do not. It's a matter of cultural law.

May 5, 201016 yr Let me add this scenario: These women contend that breasts are "just flesh", in the same sense that men's chests are "just flesh". Would they, then, be bothered were someone to casually touch their "flesh" as they would simply touch their shoulder or their hand? Under most current laws, if a man were to touch a woman's breasts without consent, that would be grounds for sexual assault, but to the best of my knowledge, there isn't much president creating such a crime for a man non-consensually touching another man's chest. Would these women be willing to do away with that double standard?
