Roy Walton Passes at 80 year of age

Coach Walton was a great person and a great coach. I remember seeing him on TV as a kid and wanting to coach because of the way his players spoke about him. I was fortunate to have met him a few times in the past ten years and he was a thrill to be around. May our prayers be with his family and friends. Rest in Peace, Coach Walton.

May he rest in peace. The fraternity of Kentucky Football Coaches has lost one of their most interesting figures. I met him a few times and he was engaging, very cordial and always made me laugh. He was a great person to talk to and I recall those conversations very fondly.

Can anyone provide me some insight on his career. I fondly remember a guy that was at Tates Creek for a long time and they were always very good. This name rings that bell, but I may be wrong.

He was the Bob Schneider of Lexington.

If a coach is measured by the love and respect his current and former players have for him, Roy Walton is the greatest coach of all-time.

He was a colorful figure and a wonderful man. My condolences to the Walton family and to all the players and students who had their lives touched by Coach Walton.

He will be missed!

My wife was a Tates Creek grad and she said he really did a lot outside of football for the kids including going out of his way to help the special needs kids.

That is him.

Was a great interview to local sportscasters who were playing the Creek. Very nice man the couple of times I was around him. :thumb:

RIP Coach Walton.

I wonder how many men coached under Coach Walton and then went on to be head coaches? I think it would be a long list.

I know Philip Haywood is one, he did his student teaching at TC and coached under Coach Walton there.

I don't know about coached but current Tates Creek H.C. Mike Harmon and Lafayette H.C. Rob Sayre both played for him.

Prayers and thought go out to family and friends. He was a great man and figure for high school football in the state of KY.

He was the Bob Schneider of Lexington.

When I was growing up I always thought of him as the Bear Bryant of KY HS football. I was not one of his players or coaches, but I did get to meet him through my dad who had coached in Lexington in the late 60's. I was really disappointed that it never worked out for me to be a coach for him.

Over the past 23 years he always made time for me to give advice or talk- he was a very wise old coach. The things he said helped me make much better decisions and also keep what little bit of my sanity I still have. He was a genius/master in dealing with people- players, coaches, administrators, bosses, parents, etc. I learned alot from him. He made a big difference for me as he did so many.

Thank you to the Walton family and to the Tates Creek football family for sharing a great man with the rest of us.

We scrimmaged Tates Creek three years in a row (one at UK practice field) and then ended up playing against Tates Creek in back-to-back 4A playoff games, so I became familiar with coach Walton....still remember coach Walton coming over to our lockerroom after the 1988 playoff game (very good game, and really hard loss for us) and coach Walton asked coach Ahrman if he could speak to us, he was a "CLASS ACT".....was fortunate enough to attend EKU and became friends with a couple of Tates Creek players form both the 1988 & 1989 seasons....they had nothing but great things to say about coach Walton.

Much respect and RIP coach Walton....from Camel County Football
