Just as I am giving Dez the benefit of the doubt here, I will do the same for Ireland. We still do not know the entire context of the question. Say they were discussing his mom and Dez had said how she would flag down guys in the streets during her drug days, and the prostitution question was a follow-up to it, then it would make a little more sense. I still have a difficult time thinking he just asked this out of the blue. But I agree it was probably already known and he most likely took it too far.

 

Billick brought up a good point this morning in that you wonder if Arthur Blank and company would have asked more probing questions to Michael Vick before investing their franchise in him?

 

Another good point on Mike and Mike was brought up as well this morning. If you have a rookie wage scale, that eliminates a lot of this pre-draft interview silliness.

 

Another great point made on that show by Billick was nobody would have known about the question if it wasn't for Dez telling people.

There are other ways of asking a question to gain information without implying that someone's mother is a hooker. She served 15 years on drug related charges. Ask a question involving a real concern

 

"We are aware of your mother's past legal issues. We also understand how friends and family members can have a huge impact on how someone conducts their personal business off the field. Tell us specifically why we, as an organization who would be paying you a great deal of money, we should not be concerned about this."

It sounds like his mother has had issues with the law. I don't know what they were, and I'm sure its a little to late for her to do the right thing now. If Dez wants to make more money than all of us combined who have commented on this subject... he needs to understand why the questions were being asked. My problem is if they pay him millions then every time something doesn't go his way he's going to spout off to the media. I see a reason to think I might be thinking about signing the next wide out troublemaker. Ireland's gonna apologize. What else can he do? The more you stir this the more its going to stink.

You and I have a very different view of prostitution. I think it should be legal. It may have gone too far, but if I was looking to spend as much money as he would have commanded in that spot I think I would have asked every question I could think of.

My thing is that prostitution is one of the lowest things a person can do in our society. Outside of committing murder or molesting a child, what other things can you do that are considered as bad as selling your body for money? And even if Dez's mom was a prostitute it has nothing to do with Dez. The trouble Dez got in with the NCAA was not bad trouble, he just lied about his contact with Deion Sanders because he was probably scared that he had committed a infraction.

 

And in asking Dez if his mother was a prostitute, they were pretty much accusing her of being so. There's nothing wrong with being thorough in their research about players, but my goodness draw the line somewhere. JMO.

IMO the amount of money should in NO way determine permissability of questions that are out of line.

There were two people who knew that question was asked, and they were both in the same room. One of them talked and it most likely wasn't Ireland. There was more from Ireland today on the 2 pm version of Sports Center. Before his career is over Bryant will have at least one audience with the Commissioner.

Name a job that is looked at as being worse than prostitution. Name it. That's just not me, I have asked probably about 40 people today about it. All I stated was what is the worst profession you could have based on how society would view it. Almost everyone said a prostitute and the ones that didn't said a stripper (which I don't necessarily agree with).

 

Research shows that most people in America do not have a favorable view of individual prostitutes, even if they are for legalizing prostitution. There's really nothing to argue about. The statement I made was a general statement, maybe it's not the 3rd worst thing you can do, but common sense would tell you that most people do not think highly of prostitutes.

 

Like I said you don't know my personal views on it. I don't care one way or another, and to be honest I think people should be able to do whatever they feel like as long as they are not hurting other people. If someone wants to sell their body for money, more power to them. However I think people just have to be realistic. Why would people be mad about the whole Dez Bryant thing if prostitution was not a social mores? Maybe my statement went too far, but their would not have been the outrage over the Bryant situation if prostitution was universally acceptable in American society.

Bryant denies the following, but apparently the following exchange took place during the interview. If true, certainly explains the context of the situation and makes it pretty clear why THE question was asked.

 

 

Bryant: "My dad was a pimp."

 

Ireland: "What did your mom do [for a living]?"

 

Bryant: "She worked for my dad."

 

Ireland: "Your mom was a prostitute?"

 

Bryant: "No, she wasn't a prostitute."
