Alot of times for kids fear becomes respect. I bet a lot of posters, I bet, were scared of their dad if they screwed up but as they got older they learned to respect him.

I got paddled in school, a lot. At one point, I held the record for most in a school year. I turned out pretty messed up.

 

Whether I'm messed up because of the swats is open for debate.

When I was in school, it was the principal or vice-principal who acted as "the enforcer." In that set-up, the teacher/student relationship doesn't have to enter into it.

I am a believer in strict discipline in home and in schools. However I oppose paddling in schools.........Too many idiot adults and nitpickers as teachers to allow this to go on..... I mean the stuff my kids get in trouble for sometimes is just stupid, This day in age we don't let kids be kids? Discipline and but whoopins should be given at home and managed at school...The problem in todays world is school is the parent in a lot of cases.

As a teacher there is NO way on Earth I would paddle a student even if my school district allowed it. Maybe I'm not teaching the same students they everyone else has, I don't know? In 10 years of teaching/coaching in 3 different school systems I've never once thought....you know what that kid needs is for me to hit him/her?

 

Discipline is NOT my job, that is a job for parents and administrators. I teach chemistry and physics to 16-18 year old students that's what I draw a paycheck to do. I maintain a learning environment in my classroom at all times and I've never had to resort to anything other than assigning detention when a student gets out of line. I feel like my students and players respect me at all times, not because I have the authority to beat the crap out of them, but because they know I care about them and I work with them to achieve their academic and athletic goals.

 

I disagree with the assertion that kids are worse or more disrespectful than in times past. 99% of kids in any given school system are good kids that just want to succeed. Will they slip up? Of course, but I don't think paddling is the answer to that. The 1% of students that others classify as "bad" kids usually come from a home environment that would make your head spin. The last thing you would want to do to those kids is paddle them.

Very true, but not the motivating factor that you want between a student and teacher.

I would not agree that kids don't need to be hit, I just don't trust the judgement of all teachers etc..... many kids need lined out, just not the schools place to do so...But with that being said discipline in schools is mostly a joke for those kids who do not really care.

Schools are not a place for discipline. They are places of education. Why should teachers and administrators be held responsible for raising everyone else's kids? We are only responsible for educating them.
