“We were going down to Bourbon County to play Bryan Station and I told him to skip the game to take the test,” Russell said. ”But then we got down there and we were getting off the bus, and there he was. I think he knew I wasn’t going to let him get on the bus, so he just went down with his family.”

For any of you young athletes that read the post's here, it's not fine to take your first ACT exam in the Spring of your senior year. Most colleges aren't heavily considering you until they know you can score high enough to be cleared. While you're sitting on the ball, another athlete who may be just as talented or sometimes less talented will take your scholarship while you procrastinate, because they already have the score to prove their merit, so don't ever assume you are the only one receiving that schools offer. You know the saying "stay ahead of the game" take your ACT early and it gives you a chance to improve the score if it's not at as high as you or the schools would like.

 

Not trying to be a sour grape on your post, but we don't want to give athletes the wrong message. The message should be for them to prep their education early, like in the junior year and enjoy the senior year knowing they have the hard part behind them.

 

 

 

A fine dissertation on the ACT but I am addressing one player in one specific situation not giving advice for the masses. Also quite frankly I did not like the insinuation that Coach Russell somehow did something wrong. The damage as far as taking the:thumb: ACT was done well before he got to Newport.

I don't think anyone is questioning whether or not Coach Russell did anything wrong.

 

The question is...why is Coach Russell saying that he instructed Demarko to take the ACT and skip the game, but Demarko is giving a different story? That's what people, like myself, want to know.

Liar, Liar pants on fire... someone is not telling the truth! :idunno:

If Russell told the kid to stay home and take the ACT, and the kid didn't then Russell shouldn't have played him.

 

If Russell figured the kid had waited this long to take the ACT, and we have a game scheduled so I want him to play, that's between him the parents, and the school. But, if that's the case and the kid WAS on the bus, then why make up a story now?

Heard today that NKU is not really looking to offer Foster a scholarship. Shame cuz I'd like to see him get a 4yr chance there. Bet he'd get an offer if he had went to Holy Cross???

I agree, Demarko could work circles around guys like Bibbins/Sorrell and the kid from Moeller they signed last year. Its all political, trust me. I have talked to a guy that has recruiters calling him all the time about the guys he trains.

Bibbins started off at NKU as a walk on and earned the scholarship by being better than some of theguys they had back then. He has had a really solid career in a tough basketball conference at the D2 level.

 

Sorrell put up crazy numbers in high school and had some other opportunities other than NKU.

 

Rack was the starting PG on a state championship team in the big school division in Ohio and also had a solid AAU career with Shining Star. He had some pretty solid numbers for Moeller and he has been the PG for teams that won games in big time environments in high school and AAU.

 

Foster has a couple of things working against him. He burst onto the recruiting scene late when a lot of teams already had commitments. Taking the ACT so late is also an issue.

 

It can also be a numbers game at certain schools as to how many scholarships they have open at that time. Some coaches don't like to overrecruit at positions where they already have players on the roster or have targeted a player in the following years senior class.

 

You also have to look at the changing landscape of D2 recruiting. One of the ways to be competitive is to see what is available to transfer back from the D1 level.

 

Bezold is in a tough spot at NKU. If he recruits the local kids and loses he is out of a job. When he doesn't recruit the local kids he catches flak. When he does recruit a local kid it might not be the one everyone thinks he should (Brady Jolly) and he catches flak.

 

Foster is going to be a great catch for some school but I just think there is a lot more than just politics that play into these types of situations. I see Bezold at a lot of local HS games so I think if a local kid was a good fit for their needs at that time I don't think he would have a problem offering a scholarship.

Valid points all. The problem at NKU is they are dwarfed by UK, U of L, UC, Xavier and everyone else of d-1 status. They are always a fall back position for players or D-1 castoffs. Until they go D-1, which based on their size alone, they should, it is hard to take the Norse seriously.

Foster will get a chance to play somewhere. I don't think it will be NKU, and I don't think that would be the best fit for him either.
