Do you think there was a good group of receivers to catch the ball year before last? There is a lot more to a good passing game than just having a QB that can sling it 60 yards. Hartline passed for over 1600 yards with a group of receivers that would not have started anywhere in the SEC.

 

You're a Hartline supporter. I salute you. I am not. Perhaps we're seeing two different QB's but I don't see any hope for the guy. Hopefully, if he does end up with the starting job, (which I don't think he will), I'll be proven wrong.

Hartline does not have the arm to be a starter in the SEC IMO. I also question his leadership abilities when he got benched for Cobb and he threw EVERYONE ELSE under the bus. I have a hard time seeing UK as being more than a doormat for the SEC if Hartline is the man.

 

I also wonder how much this matters because we heard this same stuff when Woodson was passed up by Pulley in the spring. We all know how that worked out. I also question how much confidence the coaching staff has in Hartline. We all heard about how he was ready for the bowl game and he played the same number of snaps as I did. I know Brooks was in charge then, but I bet if Joker had really wanted Hartline on the field he would have got him in some.

 

I wish UK the best of luck and will be pulling for them, but I do not think Hartline is the answer. Of course Joker may know more football than me.

 

 

Good point about Woodson and Pulley. Woodson got ripped on here his first two seasons. Needless to say, while I don't see it happening, I would love to see Hartline repeat what Woodson did his last 2 years. I agree he doesn't have the arm that Woodson had, and it doesn't help that he doesn't have the WRs that Woodson had to throw to. However, he does have Cobb and a young & improving WR corps, so I am hopeful that he will have a breakout season.

 

I was told by a player that the reason Hartline did not get to play in the bowl game was due to a little bit of swelling in his knee and the coaches did not want to chance it.

Mike Hartline might have looked much better to this point in his career, if he had three NFL receivers plus Dickey Lyons, Jr. to throw to in his first two years under center at Kentucky.

I was wondering that as well. Regardless of who is under center for UK, where are the dependable receivers, much less guys who actually scare opposing defenses? UK simply hasn't had them since Woodson's final season. Ultimately, Morgan Newton showed nothing more than Hartline last season. If people are going to take the stance that UK needs more than Hartline under center, then why not add Newton as well?

 

My preference would be that one of the young guys would emerge as a rising star at QB and win the job simply because we'd have some stability at QB for a couple of season. But, that's just what I hope would happen. What I truly want is for the best QB to be playing in 2010. If that's Hartline, then that's who it is. I've got confidence in Randy Sanders and Joker Phillips, just like I had confidence in Rich Brooks.

 

But, UK needs to develop some weapons at the skill positions or it won't matter who the QB is.

I like to think I am a supporter of all the players. It just so happens that Hartline is the one continously being bashed, and in my opinion, unfairly. He played his first season with what was probably the worst group of receivers UK has put on the field in the last 20 years, Joe Montana would have struggled. IMO at this point he is a far better QB than Newton. I haven't seen Mossakowski, but I'm guessing the experience Hartline has will make him better at this point as well.

Regardless of recievers, Hartline is terribly indecisive and at times very innaccurate. Newton of course wasn't much better last year, but I thought he faired just as well as a true Freshman. One would like to think that he would surely improve from last year, which would imo, give him the edge over Mike, "I'm afraid of getting hit" Hartline.

I know the current WRs aren't as good as what UK had a few years ago but Cobb, Matthews and King aren't garbage either. There's no excuse to not be able to move the ball with them.

I think this year's corps will be better than last year. The new guys have a year under their belt, and we did see flashes of what Matthews and King can bring. Hope to see a lot more this season! That will help whomever is the QB this season.

I see no reason why it couldn't be one of the top WR units in the SEC next year. I don't think it would be the best but it could be in the top half of the units in the conference.:thumb:

So even though everything that has come out of spring camp says that the veteran is far ahead right now, this season should be scraped to go with the younger QB?
