April 8, 201016 yr Which doesn't mean it will be this year. Will Cordero be as good as he was last year? Iffy. Rhodes is getting older. Herrera is nothing more than a lefty specialist. Masset had a year that was off the charts for him ... there is no guarantee he can maintain that level of performance. We'll see, won't we? I'm just saying it was good last year no reason to think its going to be below average now. I might not be as good but I don't see a huge drop off. It's 2 games and we have a new guy in the pen and some guys might be rusty still. To say it is below average is just flat out wrong.
April 8, 201016 yr Cordero is also "above average", although I agree that he is overpaid. He threw 66.2 innings last year with a 2.16 ERA & 1.32 WHIP. 58 K in 66 innings. 2-6 Record with 39 saves, 4 blown saves. Struggled in '08: 5-4 with 34 Saves (6 blown). 70 innings pitched. 3.33 ERA w/ 1.41 WHIP. Cordero was also pretty good in '06 & '07 with the Brewers. 1.69 ERA & 2.98 ERA.
April 8, 201016 yr Just for the record reds bullpen was 3rd best in the NL last year and 4th in all of baseball. Now that would just scream below average to me.

I am saying there is a good chance it won't be as good as it was last year.
April 8, 201016 yr I wasn't the one that said the Reds' bullpen was below average. I am saying there is a good chance it won't be as good as it was last year. Right, because it is very hard to duplicate being one of the best bullpens in the NL, which the Reds were last year.
April 8, 201016 yr Right, because it is very hard to duplicate being one of the best bullpens in the NL, which the Reds were last year. I want to make sure I'm following the line of thinking here. Because they were very good last year is why we believe they will be this year?
April 8, 201016 yr Nick Masset is a big guy with a power arm. Last year, he threw 76 innings (career high) with a 2.37 ERA & 1.03 WHIP. He had 70 K's in those 76 IP. He went 5-1 with 20 holds. That's well above "average". Without a doubt, Masset struggled with the White Sox. In his 10 games with the Reds in '08, he threw 17 1/3 innings with a 2.08 ERA, 1.21 WHIP & 11 K in those 17 innings. He has been very, very good in Cincinnati. Masset has been good with the Reds. I just don't know that he can maintain that level of performance over the long term.
April 8, 201016 yr Gotta love BP swinging at the 1st pitch after a walk to votto with 2 guys on. Typical Reds baseball right there...
April 8, 201016 yr I want to make sure I'm following the line of thinking here. Because they were very good last year is why we believe they will be this year? No. I don't expect the Reds bullpen to be as good this year as it was last year; however, to say that they are "below average" is not accurate. Masset is very good in the 8th. Cordero has been very good in the 9th. Rhodes has been tough as nails against lefties. Lefties have a career average of .215 against him. Herrera has also been very good against lefties, with a career batting average against of .176. I'm willing to give Ondrusek some time. Hopefully Burton can get back to form & will contribute this year.
